It just truly annoys me. There are legitimate reasons for keeping “hot” snakes in captivity - i.e. farming for antivenin. Arguably very cautious public education and demystification by very careful professionals might be another. They’re often beautiful and very interesting animals. But as cool pets and to make a buck by showing off your handling skills are not among them. There have just been too many bad bites by people getting careless or unlucky. I’ve mentioned the folks I’ve personally known who have died or been hospitalized by being careless before. Very experienced, expert people! It’s an old story - get complacent, become careless, boom. I’ve been bitten dozens if not hundreds of times handling snakes. It meant nothing because it was overwhelmingly just pin-pricks. But even though I technically know how to do it, I will not blithely handle venomous reptiles anymore than I will blithely play in traffic. ---

I hike a fair amount, we are lucky to have a large mountain smack-bang in the middle of Cape Town. I rarely see snakes, although they are there, apparently a fairly dense number - cant recall it offhand. I once exhibited my ballet skills with a full leap and half twist, while issuing an operatic soprano scream after I almost stood on a [rinkhals cobra](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rinkhals) quitely chilling on a path. My hiking friends still make fun of me. The snake didn’t even point and laugh. I saw a “snake charmer” with a cobra in a castle in Rajasthan, India. I quickly pushed through the crowd of tourists and moved on. I’m not into cruelty to animals.
