Yeah, well the OP likes the Cubs so there’s no accounting for taste. I don’t see what all the hate is about. Katy Perry isn’t pretentious like Lady Gaga. She’s not as shrill as Avril Lavign. Isn’t a butch Matt Damon lookalike like P!nk. Doesn’t look like a six foot tall trashbag you would find in the alley of a nightclub Saturday morning like Ke$ha. Isn’t crazy like Britney Spears. She isn’t nearly annoying as Miley Cyrus nor as bland as Taylor Swift. All things considered, she’s probably one of the most likeable of the new group of white pop diva chicks. ---

Seems like a word by any meaningful accepted definition of the term (i.e. a single distinct meaningful element of speech or writing, used with others (or sometimes alone) to form a sentence). Firework gets more than 40,000,000 hits on google. It’s a real word. Curiously enough firework -fireworks gets 67,000,000. I’ll grant that most people would refer to the stuff you buy to set off in the driveway as firecrackers. (Why does no one complain about the singular firecracker? It’s filling exactly the same function as firework so why does it get a pass?) But the big colorful explosion in the sky on the 4th? That was a firework, not a firecracker. ---

I like Perry’s infamous [Sesame Street version of Hot N Cold](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YHROHJlU_Ng&feature=related). And I like that she seems to be exploiting the whole “pop-tart” image to achieve success but doesn’t take herself too seriously. Like she’s winking at us, saying “this is really silly, isn’t it?” while she still works hard to put out an entertaining product for her fans. She may not be for everyone, but she’s doing something right. It’s hard to argue with her success. Plus, boobies. ---

There was a story about her on CBS _Sunday Morning_ (There! Proof I’m a middle-brow. I watch _Sunday Morning_) “Does it bother you that some critics don’t take you seriously.” (Laughter) “I wear a whipped cream bra! Of course people don’t take me seriously.” Katy Perry knows exactly what she’s doing, and when it stops working, she’ll do something else. ---
