Keys and rollerskates
Damn and blast. I have a fair few of Melanie’s records right beside me but NO sodding record player.
I’m in the same boat. At one point I collected Melanie albums. I must have at least two dozen LPs, but I can’t listen to any of them.
Have you seen this version?

That is a very cute video (jayjay posted the link in post #55), so props to the person who made it, and usually Cher gets her share of kudos from me as a pure singer (vocal ability only), as an actress, and for her attitude (though I could leave her as an exhibitionist rock’n’roller and fashion maven), but I don’t particularly care for that cover. It lost everything that was adorable about the original.

Cuter!
Cuter than Melanie? Oh no no. I’d much rather hear (and see) Melanie singing it.

Upthread I mentioned “Look What They Done To My Song, Ma” as one of her “novelty” songs, and a lot of people treated it that way, but I just watched this live performance and was reminded that the lyrics were actually fairly serious.
Is this song a reference to some song that she had written, which was butchered by some producer or group that had recorded it?
Anyway, before I leave this thread I have to say that, dammit, I think the song “Brand New Key” is absolutely adorable. I loved finding this live, acoustic version on YouTube. She’s such a sweetie.

Beautiful. [sniff]

Heresy. We burn you at dusk.
Oh yeah? Well, my chills get goose bumps when I hear that.
p.s. Any chick that can crank her intensity up to 11 has a spot in my play list.

I wish I knew. I can only assume. I’ve never heard the particular story behind the song, but it applies to anything that someone creates from the heart that someone else takes and screws up.
For I hope obvious reasons, I primarily associate this song with Heather Graham’s character in Boogie Nights. Don’t know if the same association is true for you, though.

I remember the song from when it was originally produced, but the Roller Girl association is still pretty strong. Oddly enough, Roller Girl’s skates didn’t need a key - she wore the boot style that was all one piece. That’s small help to the guy she stomped to death.

I just watched “Boogie Nights”. It was clear that the guy was still alive and moaning when the limo pulled away after the driver, cameraman and Jack pulled Rollergirl off of him. I doubt he’d be able to successfully press charges. His “I was assaulted by a porn star!” story wouldn’t be taken very seriously by the police.
