Khadaji’s Whatcha Reading Thread - August 2022 edition

Finished The Lost Stars: Tarnished Knight, by Jack Campbell. Not recommended.

Now I’m reading How to Survive a Sharknado: And Other Unnatural Disasters, by Andrew Shaffer, Fin Shepard, and April Wexler.

Finished Just Like Home by Sarah Gailey. For the most part, it was very slow and all the characters were unlikable. It seems to be about a woman coming to terms with the fact that her beloved father was a serial killer, and that much is true, but by the end it veers completely into the supernatural. I can’t say I liked this book, but I might give the author another chance sometime.

Finished How to Survive a Sharknado: And Other Unnatural Disasters, by Andrew Shaffer, Fin Shepard, and April Wexler. Not recommended.

Now I’m reading A Thrill a Minute with Jack Albany, by John Godey.

I’ve read Upright Women Wanted by her and that would be my opinion as well. She totally blew off world building in favor of her agenda and then didn’t even end the book, she just stopped writing.

Yeah, I’m in no hurry to try her again, but was intrigued by her willingness to let things get weird. I guess that’s only a good thing if the author can pull it off.

Now about halfway through and still enjoying Stephen King’s The Dead Zone. The hero just reconnected with his former girlfriend in a heartwarming little chapter.

I’ve also been skimming the more interesting bits of The Battle of Midway, a collection of essays from Naval History magazine over the years, edited by Thomas C. Howe.

Started today on Old Country, by Matt and Harrison Query. It’s a horror novel about a young married couple who move out to an extremely secluded ranch in Idaho. The neighbors warn them about a malevolent spirit, and of course they think the neighbors are crazy. Something inexplicable is about to happen… Really liking it so far.

Finished A Thrill a Minute with Jack Albany, by John Godey. Meh.

Now I’m reading The Remarkable Case of Dr. Ward & Other Amazing Gardening Innovations, by Abigail Willis.

Finished The Lincoln Highway by Amor Towles. A pretty good read (actually, a good listen), much better than The Rules of Civility which I read earlier this month. It’s a good plot line, although Towles gets far too wordy at times, to the point where the action bogs down. But still a story that kept me engaged until the end.

Next up: A Gentleman in Moscow by the same author.

I will get the September thread up later this evening MST. I need to a few things this afternoon.

The Remarkable Case of Dr. Ward & Other Amazing Gardening Innovations, by Abigail Willis, which was interesting. Recommended to people who enjoy gardening.

Now I’m reading Plumage from Pegasus by Paul Di Filippo.

New thread: Is grasshopper season going to end any time soon?
