Currently reading Vanished Kingdoms: The History of Half-Forgotten Europe by Norman Davies. I’m enjoying it very much - its a bunch of capsule histories together with his ruminations on the nature of historical memory.
Very cogent for me was his chapter on Galicia - both my mother’s parents and my wife’s parents had ancestors from there, and already the memory is very hazy as to what exactly it was (my mother gets confused as to where her grandmother came from - was it Poland, Russia, Ukraine or Austria? It was … Galicia, a kingdom under the crown of the Austrian Empire).
