I’m seven stories into Ghostwritten, too! Isn’t it amazing? His ability to change his “voice” for his characters, and the depth of his knowledge of cultures and history, is very impressive.
I think it’s my book of the year, jayrey. Just flat out brilliant!
I’m glad you liked it! I thought it was really a pip.
Just finished Empire in Black and Gold, volume one of the ten book Shadow of the Apt series by Adrian Tchaikovsky.
Epic fantasy on a world in which the various peoples have taken on the behaviours and sometimes the attributes of various insect & arthropod species - the title refers to the encroaching armies of the wasp-men, who are trying to conquer the lands of beetle-men, ant-men, mantis-men, etc.
I’m enjoying it a lot more than I thought I might, although I’m not sure how far I’ll go with the series.
In any case, next up is Jack McDevitt’s new book, Thunderbird. It’s a sequel to his 1996 novel, Ancient Shores, in which a perfectly preserved yacht was found buried in the mid-West, miles from any water. But near where there used to be water millennia ago!
I’m reading “Sneaky People” by Thomas Berger. I suspect the Coen brothers read it too, since it has a lot in common with “Fargo.”
Southern accents rather than Minnesota accents, of course.
I *should * get the new thread up tonight. Feel free to throw shoes at me if I forget.
Finished The Castle in the Forest, by Norman Mailer. His final novel, published in the year of his death at age 84, in 2007. Historical fiction detailing the family background and childhood of Adolf Hitler, as told by the devil in charge of shaping his influences. Very interesting.
Next up is A Delicate Truth, the most recent novel by John le Carre.
Save your shoes!
December Thread: Will you look at that, we actually have snow!
I just happened to see this message about author, Lucia Berlin. She was my dad’s first cousin and the story you describe, Tiger Bites, is about my extended family in El Paso. The famous Mexican director, Pedro Almodovar is working on a movie based on this story right now. Kate Blanchett is likely to play Lucia. Exciting stuff… skeleton in the closet stories people in my family only whispered about.
