Bumping this because I saw this last weekend. Spoilers below! . . . . . . . . . . . . I liked this movie a lot. Sure, it really misses Nick Cage, and Jim Carrey didn’t really get the opportunity to show off what a crazy nut he can be, but this movie gets a lot of things right. First, I thought one of the weaknesses would have been the rather unimpressive Red Mist donning the mask or cowl as the new villain. Chris was a whiny bitch in the last movie so he wouldn’t have been nearly that threatening as the only villain. I’m glad he got wise to that early on and realized that he’s got a fortune backing him up and used it to his advantage. I’m also glad that they focused on Hit Girl’s troubles at school and how she just wouldn’t fit into it like some normal Peter Parker type, doing schoolwork by day and fighting crime by night. She’s totally messed up and can’t function in normal society and I think the movie did a pretty decent job at showing that. I had forgotten that Dave’s dad still didn’t realize he was Kick Ass, its been a while since the first movie. And I’m glad they didn’t play him up now to be some superhero beating back gangs on his own. That sort of comic booky schtick is best left to Hit Girl. Kick Ass is about how real people would fare as a costumed hero and I’m kinda glad he was shown to still be vulnerable even after all that training. And is it me or is the actor who plays him the whitest and pastiest buff guy you’ve ever seen? I loved how Chris picks a stupid name for himself, a dumbass costume using his mom’s bondage sex gear, and chooses racist names for his henchmen. Hilarious! Mother Russia is fucking awesome too! And speaking of henchmen, I also liked the mix personalities in the good guy group, ranging from delusional (Colonel Stars & Stripes), good people out of their league (the older couple), a guy who’s just having some fun (Dr. Gravity), a real person motivated by tragedy (Nightbitch, and the older couple too), and a kid who just wanted to join up (Battle Guy). You’ve got the leader, the girl, the scientist, and the comic relief, all standard tropes in any superhero/villain group. I would have hoped that they used the scary uncle mafia guy more though, not as the main villain but maybe have Chris cut his teeth as his first big villain move to blow up his uncle with a phallus shaped bomb or something, just to show he’s at least graduating from comically inept villain to serious bad guy. He basically didn’t do anything back after his only friend John Leguizamo was killed. I wasn’t disappointed with the ending, though I guess how it ended means we’ll probably not have a sequel after this. I dunno about the comic this was based on so maybe Hit Girl comes back, but it’ll be hard to segue from the sorta realistic but still cartoony villains here to something perhaps more serious. Maybe that crazy mafia uncle guy becomes the new baddie, but that doesn’t seem to fit well with the overall theme of the movies. Anyway, Chloe Moretz did great again and had a different role to play as the teacher this time, I guess she’ll be moving on to bigger and better things from now on and Kick Ass is officially retired. ---

Man, I think this is not only the worst sequel I’ve ever seen, but possibly the worst movie I’ve ever seen, period (and I really liked the first one). I’m guessing that Jim Carrey realized what a stinker it is, didn’t want to go through the agony of putting on a fake smile for the promotion circuit, and used the “glorifying violence” thing as an excuse to just get away from the damned thing as quickly as possible. ---

I’m not the targeted demographic for this film so I’m sure the producers don’t give a fat rat’s ass what this old(ish) lady thinks. For what it’s worth, I was looking forward to taking my boyfriend’s son, just because I’d heard good things about the first one and he seemed so excited to go. Holy shit, what and odd and unpleasant movie. It just left a bad taste in my mouth in every way. Not funny enough to be a comedy, not super heroic enough to be taken seriously. Just. . . unattractively filmed, featuring totally unlikable actors (even the “good guys” were annoying). The only good thing I will say is about Jim Carey. Not that his character was that great, but it took me half the movie to realize it was indeed him. I don’t know when I’ve seen him camouflage himself more (no pun intended;I’m not really referring to his make-up and costume but rather his acting). ---
