> There is no legal definition of personal space. Are you seriously claiming that such thing doesn’t exist? That is a concept foreign to you?

Then there’s nothing I need to respect, legally. And there’s nothing you can do about it, legally, except walk away and maybe holler incoherently. I can walk right up to you and start clicking away with my camera, no harm no foul.

You’ve failed to show any kind of harm in having your picture taken. You’ve failed to raise a single objection public photography beyond “it makes me uncomfortable”, which isn’t a reason for anyone to stop doing jack shit.

Ya know what makes me uncomfortable? Seeing your posts on this message board. Are you going to stop posting? :dubious:

Some people will leave. Others will call you names. Others may try to hit you. Others may ignore you. Others may go home and cry. Others may try to flirt. What you can’t tell me is that you expect no interaction at all, or that you would be surprised if such interaction happens.

I don’t consider anything to be my “private parcel in the world” beyond my own property lines and my own body. WHY WOULD I? There’s no legal right, no precedent, nothing in this world that would ever give me the impression that there is any such thing. Why would I simply arbitrarily decide that there was???

Yes! Of course I would! I’m not a jerk, I don’t want to ruin your day. What sort of sociopath would keep on posting in a board if he knows that he’s harming somebody while doing it?

And I’m fine if you don’t care about my feelings enough to stop taking pictures of me, as long as you don’t break any laws while doing it. I’m just saying that you shouldn’t be that surprised that others don’t think like you.

Because that’s natural behaviour. Because we are social animals. Because we have unwritten rules about the way we should treat each other, and that includes respecting each other spaces.

Reading back what I said, it was “…and I disagree with that because its my opinion that going to the beach just to take pictures of people in their bathing suits without their consent is wrong.”

I’m not moving goal posts to accuse your client, counsellor, nor am I giving evidence under oath at some trial. I’ve stated my POV and my opinion on the matter and thats all I have to say on the subject.

I would have to question whether you’ve ever even spoken to a human being, but at least I would understand it.

See, I do have a sense or personal space. Fortunately for me, it doesn’t encompass entire stretches of coastline… or streets, amusement parks, etc.

I do find it kind of funny that so far, only three people in this thread have any problem with having their picture taken in a public area, but somehow it’s everyone else that is abnormal.

> You don’t. You use your own standards for what you consider your private parcel in the world. Well, maybe not you, but at least most people do.

The video shows that the toy was flying at what appears to most people to be an altitude of fifty feet, and that it was in continuous motions and not hovering.

Normal, reasonable people who don’t have emotional issues would not consider a non-loitering object 50 feet away to be invading their personal space. Nor would a normal, reasonable person without emotional issues feel intruded upon if a toy flew past him or her 20 feet away. If the person knew it was coming (it does appear to be fairly noisy), then 10 feet might not be too close. If someone flew his toy five feet away from me or closer, then I’d consider it ‘buzzing’.

Given that the toy was 50 feet away from the woman, and it was continually in forward motion, the woman had absolutely no reason to feel threatened in any way.

> Of course, we’re going a little astray here. What did you want this kid to do? Ask every single person on that _public_ beach whether they minded being photographer before taking a scenic shot of bathers on the beach from above? That sounds absolutely crazy to me that one would have to ask anyone in any picture taken involving humans in the picture their permission to be in the picture.

I took a helicopter flight over Sydney one time and the return trip flew us over Bondi. Since I had my 400mm lens with me, I whipped it onto the camera and took some shots of the sunbathers and other, more general photos of the beach. No, I didn’t get permission before I did so and it never occurred to me that I should.

I’m a rank amateur and I take photos of people in the street all the time. If I went up to each individual and asked for permission the candid nature and naturalness of the shot would be lost.

Camera Rape is the worst kind of rape as you often don’t realize that it’s even happened.

> And in this case, modern cameras can zoom up to impressive detail, even at 50 feet, so it isn’t that different from walking along the beach with a camera. If you can understand how anybody could react to a guy filming people at the beach, then you should understand how the same goes for a quadcopter.

One of the TV stations has a [commercial](http://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/local/SkyForce10-News-Helicopter-Chopper-NBC10-193093201.html) about their helicopter that can zoom in from 2000’ to read a license plate.
GoPro’s & all of the other action cameras that I am familiar with have fixed, wide angle lens; you can’t zoom them at all. Your typical quadcopter wouldn’t be able to get off the ground while carrying a larger, heavier, zoomable camera.
If you watched his linked video, you can barely make out “details”, like the race/sex of a person on the ground.
2000’ is (roughly) 4/10ths of a mile. The news helicopter could be 1½ blocks off the beach & 1000’ up & getting better pictures than the quadcopter 50’ up.
Frankly, someone walking by with their cell phone camera on zoom is going to get a better closeup than the quadcopter.

Your talking about needing consent to photograph in public?

Changing the law could have so many unintended consequences it makes my mind boggle. Last week my son was at a water park and I was trying take a picture of him but the other kids kept getting in the way, I finally got off a pic with other kids in the background. According to what you think should be, one of those kid’s parents could potentially press charges against me for something so trivial. No thanks.

The girl was clothed in the video, did she really think that teenager was getting off filming her from 50 feet up? Why is anyone referring the the kid as a pervert at all?

> I’m a street photographer ([gratuitous link to some of my shots](http://imgur.com/a/AZ9L9)) and thankfully the laws regarding taking photography in public are well-defined. As long as I’m not taking photos of somebody where they should expect privacy, then I’m in the clear. I’ve taken pictures of a lot of people and the only time I’ve ever been somewhat bothered about it was by [a Chicago cop](http://i.imgur.com/EdyyfNc.jpg) that didn’t like me taking photos of them questioning somebody on the street.

In public places, sometimes I ask the people after the fact if they mind if I keep the photo, and offer to email it to them. No one has ever said no. I’ve photographed beach people lots, even people’s kids.

I think if you’re nobody important, you don’t give a hoot. It’s people who think someone else cares who are paranoid. And besides, if there’s a zoom cam involved, does it really matter whether it’s in my hands or in the sky? No.
