What about us kids that didn’t have TV as children: we had Uncle Don reading the Sunday comics from the newspaper - until that unfortunate incident with the open mike. I think this may be the original of such incidents connected to others, referenced above. Later there was Freddy Freihoffer on Schenectady, the most powerful station in the Capital District (NY).
I suspect you’re just a youngster compared to me, so may I respectfully add:
-Willy the Worm
-Rivets the Robot
-Wee Willie Webber
-Bertie the Bunyip
-Crusader Rabbit and Ragland T. Tiger
-Courageous Cat and Minute Mouse
Thanks, Skywalker. At least he seemed to disappear suddenly. Maybe the mike story got started when he was fired/retired?
That was 1962-63. I recall it well. Or dimly. Or, well, dimly.
I also recall:
Romper Room
Captain Kangaroo
Bozo the Clown
Cartoon Alley with Albert the alleycat and Dinkfuzz (Milwaukee area)
Milky the Clown (Detroit area)
Wow, Pick Temple and Captain Tug, I had forgotten.
In the DC area, Bozo T. Clown was played by Willard Scott. And he had a clown cousin named Cousin Cupcake.
Au contraire, I remember all of them except for Rivits the Robot.
I was particularly attracted to Bertie the Bunyip, created by Aussie puppeteer, Lee Dexter (“bunyip” is a mythological Australian critter).
And, I loved the opening theme to Courageous Cat & Minute Mouse. I believe it’s what started me on a path to dig bass lines.
Willard Scott was also the original Ronald McDonald.
Early 70’s Detroit kid here. All the Sid and Marty Kroffts shows, like HR Pufnstuf. Lots of dope smoking writers for these shows. Rumour has it the HR in Pufnstuf stands for Hand Rolled.
Electra Woman and Dyna Girl
Doctor Shrinker
Sigmund and the Seamonster
The Banana Splitz
Land of the Lost
Far Out space Nuts
Lisville
and I remember another show that none of my peers remember that must’ve came out of the UK, hense all the accents, called Here Come The Double Deckers. Anyone but me remember?
Philly. Born in 1962.
Gene London
American Bandstand
Captain Noah and His Magical Ark.
Wee Willie Webber. This was shot at WKBS channel 48. On Ivy Hill Road in Mt. Airy. I lived 3 blocks away. We got tickets once. He was an angry horrible guy who apparently hated kids. ( Interesting side-note: that location is where Philo Farnsworth did the earliest experiments with television. I know, he wasn’t the only one. Still and all, the blue and yellow Historical Marker is pretty enthralling to find !! )
