Is it a $50,000 bond, or is that the amount of their bail? Because the two generally are not the same. Also let me be the first to say that prison rape = not funny, and blahblah. At least you said “bald” and not “black”. ---

This is Canada, after all, home of the “24 hours less a day” sentence. Ever the optimist, I’m hoping they turn these two into an object lesson. This is the worst street racing incident the city has known and it has to be made abundantly clear that bad things are going to happen both when you do such stupid things, and when you get charged for doing such stupid things. Much ado has been made of Tahir Khan’s personal situation prior to his untimely demise and about its aftermath. To let these two off with what amounts to a smack on the ass and a promise to behave would be such a gross miscarriage of justice as would greatly tarnish the reputation of our justice system (even more). Actually, the image I had in my head was a large, cue-bald, goateed white guy looking kinda lke Jesse Ventura with three good teeth and a scowl that would wither daisies at ten feet. Don’t ask me why. First image that popped into my head. 😃 And yes, I know prison rape isn’t funny as a practical matter, but it felt apropos as a metaphor for “spend some quality time with the lettered lads in the Penn Club.” ---

Just deduct time served from the sentence and be done with it. I don’t necessarily agree. I don’t know how your Canadian jails are, but here in the States, space is often at a premium. Jail is where you hold guys that might flee, or might hurt more people if they’re not contained. It’s not a place for _punishment_, per se, unless the accused is sentenced to jail time instead of prison after the trial. There’s no real reasons to hold them in jail other than punative ones. As others said, these kids are not likely flight risks, nor will they be driving. Let their parents feed and house them, rather than draining justice system resources. Secondly, I doubt they’re living happy, carefree lives on the outside. Likely, they’re scared shitless and miserable. ---

The evidence is insurmountable. There are no mitigating circumstances. The trial is therefore just a formality at this point to determine the severity of the punishment. This may be technically incorrect from a strict legal view, but at this point it’s a little like saying that the man is still innocent who is standing with the smoking gun in his hand, the gunshot residue on his clothes, the body on the ground in front of him and the ballistics-matching bullet therein. ---
