# Kim Davis asks Supreme Court to overturn gay marriage ruling of 2015

well I think that’s a pretty broad brush stroke there. Maybe this is getting outside the scope of this thread, but it certainly doesn’t describe me. I generally oppose abortion, but I support the availability of contraception (for women and men). I imagine a significant portion of the anti-abortion crowd thinks similarly.

At least here in the U.S., I’ll disagree with you on this one. The anti-abortion groups in the U.S. are largely devout Catholics and conservative Protestants, and there’s a strong overlap between those who oppose abortion, and those who oppose easy access to contraception and sex education.
Are there _some_ people like you, who oppose abortion but who support access to contraception? Sure. But in the U.S., the Venn diagram of “oppose abortion” and “oppose easy access to contraception” has a whole lot of overlap.

I guess it depends on what we consider “anti-abortion”. If you mean oppose abortion in all instances (including rape/incest, health of mother at risk, etc.), then yes probably restricted to very devout Catholics and some conservative Protestants. But it seems that approximately 75% of Catholics think there should be at least some restrictions on abortion based on this cite: [Industry](https://www.momentive.com/en-us/industry)
So, I guess I should rephrase my point to say I imagine there is a significant portion of people who believe abortion should be illegal in at least some instances (e.g. late term, etc) who also support the availability of contraception.

Again, here in the U.S., it’s the anti-abortion absolutists who are dominating the conversations, and driving the new legislation. Many of them only grudgingly accept exceptions for rape, incest, and the health of the mother (or don’t accept those exceptions at all), and many of the new laws that they are proposing (and getting passed) have minimal exceptions.

The Dutch do have nasty history regarding Africa too. when you look at back at history, Europeans seem to have a hard time leaving other people and cultures alone…the more fervent the religiosity the more aggressive they seem to be towards the native populations.

Numbers 5. I’m aware of this, and actually brought it up before on this board. But I’ve since been informed that the historic-critical (i.e. academic) consensus is that it was not actually an abortion, but just a ritual. So while I might grant it as abortion-adjacent, it’s not really an abortion.

I see it differently.
I think “West Wing” _appealed to_ a better educated, more thoughtful, more civically aware and engaged audience, while MAGA _actively sought out_ the simple, illogical, irrational, blindly faithful, overtly bigoted, sadistic, sociopathic, mean-spirited, uneducated, willfully ignorant, aggressively incurious, and shockingly credulous.
I see one group as readily, enthusiastically accepting authoritarianism while I see the other group as intrinsically poorly-prepared to fend it off. I’ll leave it to others to decide which group is which 😉
