Kindle Opinions

Yeah, so far as I can tell the Fire isn’t so much an e-book reader as a general media device that accesses more of Amazon’s library beyond books.

The Kindle Touch will be available at the end of November, as far as we can tell.

We have pre-ordered it.

Not sure you can get answers on that quite yet, although I have all sorts of information on the Kindle in general.

I have had 4- as well as the first Nook.

I have lost one, and two broke. My wife then used that as an excuse to give me hers so she could order the Touch.

I love them- they have free worldwide web browsing, the internet connection is better than my iphone for reception, and I can find books that my local store doesn’t have even at 3am when I finish the book I am on and need the sequel.

Plus, after losing it, I just type in my info to the new Kindle, and all my books are back!

I’ve had a Kindle for a few years now and I love it. It’s so much nicer and more convenient than carrying books around. And the preview feature sounds perfect in this case because you can always read a few pages before deciding to buy.

I got my Kindle cover from Etsy and I love it.

By the way, the Kindle is surprisingly cat-friendly. My cat is constantly sitting on my Kindle or walking over it (yes it’s annoying thanksforasking) and she hasn’t damaged it yet.

I’ve had a kindle for a year now and could not love it more. I now download books from the library, so I don’t even have to go there now.

I bought my Kindle as a birthday gift to myself shortly after they came out and I really enjoy it, though I do wish I’d waited 'til the price came down.

Plus, mine is the boxy, original Kindle instead of the version they have now, which looks a little more like an iPad. I keep threatening to accidentally-on purpose drop it out a window so I can get a new one, but I haven’t yet.

Anyway, I really like my Kindle, especially when I travel. Plus, it’s pretty durable (the version I have, anyway). My kids have dropped it a couple of times and accidentally ripped a button off, yet it’s stood the test of time, much to my chagrin. Those buttons just pop right back on there.

I’d highly recommend the Kindle for someone who needs to sample books before they get interested. As noted upthread, most books have a free sample available, which is nice if you’re not a committed reader. I also hear you can now use the Kindle to check out library books. I haven’t yet tried that feature, though I’d like to do so in the near future. That was the one thing that made me want a Nook after I’d purchased my Kindle - Nooks have always allowed you to check out books from the library.

I love my Kindle. I have had it over a year now and use it every day. It is one of my happiest purchases. My reasons were to cut back on the amount of book clutter in my house and - being honest - because I love gadgets. I have spoilt my Kindle with a beautiful Oberon cover. http://www.oberondesign.com/.

I can speak for the Kindle 2 and say that they’re pretty durable as well. I dropped mine in a parking lot once (from about 4 feet up, onto asphalt) and only did cosmetic damage (the worst of which was a split seam between the front plastic piece and the rear plastic piece that I had to super-glue to keep dust and stuff from getting in.) After two years of abuse, it still works like new.

Nope, no WiFi. I believe it is a standard MicroUSB, but I cannot swear to it…

??? As in, I’m getting better battery life than most people…or worse? I generally read for two to four hours every night, and recharging every three weeks is completely cool. To me, that’s good battery life. (I have to recharge my phone just slightly more often than once every week.)

Well, I love my Kindle, but I don’t think it’d be a good gift for someone who doesn’t like books much and doesn’t like gadgets.

Loves books, just picky about committing to them. Some people are happy reading just about any old trash for the sake of reading, other people are very genre specific and kinda snooty about it. Being that latter doesn’t mean you dislike books.

Actually, I guess, given that, it could be a good buy - no crappy books cluttering the bookshelves, and gifts from relatives only taking up memory rather than wall-space.

What genre is it she likes? There are ways and means to add a lot of books to the Kindle before giving it her, depending on what she likes. You should definitely add a few books as an extra to the gift. And if you have a Kindle too, you can share the books.

Kindles can also now support borrowing books from the library. This was the big decider for me when I bought my Nook last spring (Nook could, Kindle couldn’t - yet). Admittedly the selection sucks so far, but at least it’s an option.

If she’s not thrilled with an iPhone however, you might want to get her hooked on THAT first. For what it’s worth, she can read Amazon and B&N ebooks on that, as well as a ton of public-domain stuff (Stanza has a nice Gutenberg-friendly reader).

I would guess that the iPhone at least would easily handle different accounts - the first thing you do when installing the Kindle / Nook apps is to link them to your account, and that’s configurable.

I just bought a Kindle Fire last week. It was an impulse buy, but I had been thinking about an iPad or Kindle for quite a while. After only one week, I really, really like it for reading. The size is perfect because I can slip it into my bag and the 8-hour battery life means I don’t have to carry a charger wherever I go.

Already I am reading books I would hesitate to buy first-hand because they are so cheap (.99 to $3.99). However, I am already aware that the prices can add up. But I can share books with friends, which is nice.

I have also discovered the Kindle is a great way to watch movie trailers to determine whether the full-length flick will be worth it. Nice. In order to do so though, I must be on a wireless connection that I can access. My workplace has a secured router, so all I can do on lunch break is read anything I have already downloaded. Every evening though, I can add and update stuff.

Sound isn’t wonderful, but that could be my headset causing that problem.

It will keep me well entertained until I decide to go for broke and get the iPad2. I want to have it all…

I bought a new Kindle (the smaller non-touch version) and I love it.

Setup took less than 10 mins incl. wireless and I’d downloaded my first book 5 mins after that.

I only use my kindle for reading novels - so no complicated technical diagrams, just text - and it feels very natural.

I have downloaded a whole bunch of books from torrent sites so I already have more than enough to read for a year or two.

I bought the two year warrenty (another £20) and a cheap neoprene case (£8) so even if it does get damaged I get three free replacements within the two years. But it does seem very well made.

Battery life is good so far - it arrived 60% charged and I’ve topped up once since I got it a month ago and it’s still over half full.

I keep most of my books on my laptop and send them as and when needed to the Kindle, but even the 1GB memory will keep enough books for 2-3 years which is more than plenty.

I hop between books as well - it keeps your place and lists the most recent books, so I’ll dip in and out of various titles depending on which mood I’m in.

Really pleased with it - does a great job for what it is (i.e. if your books can’t do it then the kindle probably won’t!).
