Kindle or Nook?

Check the version of your operating system and make sure it is v.2.5.6, which was released last month (go to the home screen, click menu, and select settings. Your version number will display in the lower right corner.

This last patch introduced “Collections” which is essentially just tags you can apply to your titles. You can then view all the titles with a specific tag. Not quite folders, but better in that you can apply lots of tags to a single book.

Thanks to both of you!

I just got an e-mail about the new update today, which is funny because I’d been lending my Kindle to my dad to see if he could read it (his reading difficulties are two parts stroke, one part eyes) and now I need to give it back to him to see if the new sizes are better for him, since he couldn’t do it with the old ones. The new biggest size is HUGE - if he can’t read that, mom should try to keep him off the damned road.

Plus now it zooms into PDFs, which is nice.

Not to confuse the issue any more, but if you plan on getting a smart phone, like an iPhone or an Android-based phone, you can download Kindle and Nook apps and read books from the phone. Don’t have to carry another device then.

I don’t use them, so I cannot say how well they work. I’m sure not as well as the native devices. I can say the Android Kindle app cannot view electronic magazine subscriptions, which is the only thing I tried with it.

How well does the Kindle read large PDFs? I have a few PDFs that are close to 200 megs and would like to be able to read them, however, even on my work computer they take a bit to open up. Is this going to be a problem on a Kindle?

I’ve noticed that a lot of the books I might think about reading are much cheaper, and I can get them, then I would have thought. I am thinking about getting one now. I don’t know if I want the Kindle or the DX. Does Target carry the DX?

Which is why I said Amazon handled the matter poorly. They should have sent an email or similar notification to everyone that purchased the books in question informing them of the issue and that it would be removed from each individual’s inventory. Do this in advance, while explaining the legal reasons for the removal would have been the way to go.

I do believe Amazon mea culpa’d all over the place and promised to not do that again (presumably they meant without notifying people first as if this issue came up again, they would legally be forced to delete the illegal copies).

Amazon has always done right by me and I’m inclined to give them the benefit of the doubt here. Of course, you’re free not to do so.

And when you get tired of them you can replace them with your own images. That’s what I did

Yeah, but you have to install the screensaver hack, which is not a big deal, but then having to uninstall it prior to receiving a version update and then reapply it is a hassle. I left it off after the latest update. I’ll just deal with the dead authors, fish, and birds.

The hardest time I’m having so far is resisting the urge to buy books I already have. I mean, who wouldn’t want to make sure they had GWTW, Lonesome Dove, The Stand, etc… completely portable any time? Must…not…spend…my limited bank account on books I already own.

I have no idea what you’re talking about. I just put different pictures in the proper folder. I didn’t hack anything. At least I don’t remember hacking anything. It was a while ago…

Have you tried the Nook? I haven’t tried the Kindle, but the Nook has a keyboard smaller than a cell phone and an incredibly annoying navigation system. You know the two screens? The small one is the one that you use to access the net, type, and has color.

Be aware that Amazon just announced a new version of the Kindle, apparently to start shipping at the end of August.

Since there’s been so little mention of using the Kindle app on alternate devices here, I want to chime in on this one.

I was an early adopter of the original Kindle, but have switched over entirely to the iPhone Kindle app. Even with my 42-year-old eyeballs I have no problem reading full books on that device. In fact, I read all 1000+ pages of Stephen King’s “Under the Dome” earlier this year on my iPhone 3G (which doesn’t even have the high-res retina display) and suffered no eyestrain or discomfort.

For anyone who’s considering getting a dedicated reader, consider downloading the Kindle or Nook app to whatever devices you might already own first. I read that Jeff Bezos intentionally isolated the Kindle’s hardware and software divisions to ensure as much cross-platform adoption as possible, and for the reasons above I’m really glad he did.

Since I already had a Kindle, I’m not sure whether the availability of these apps (or more specifically, the ability to get content on them) is contingent on already having a physical Kindle registered to your Amazon account. Can anyone confirm this?

At $139, the new Wi-Fi Kindle is a great deal. Anyone in the market who has been waffling can now jump in with both feet.

Yeah, I’ve done some rebuying. Frankly, now with the Kindle I still read quite a few good quality books but just can’t bear to reread things that I have in crappy mass market paperback.

Don’t need a physical Kindle, I was able to “buy” a free book on Amazon.com and view it on my Android phone’s Kindle app. I do not and have never owned a physical Kindle device.

I’ve often wondered why Amazon doesn’t price it at a loss, because I would think that if they could get a lot of Kindles out there thay could make a killing on eBook sales.

Kind of OT but…

I only have Kindle for PC. I wanted to try it, before buying the real one. But, I’ve decided not to get one at all. I usually pay less than $5.00 for books on half.com. Why would I want to spend $10 on a Kindle version? Plus I can’t resell it or share with friends.

Well, sure, and you can just torrent the book in the first place, too. Both are illegal. I supposed you could argue that you have a moral right to the book, since you paid for the Kindle version. That discussion gets us into a debate about copyright and format shifting and all sorts of stuff, so I’ll just drop it and concede the point.

I really like the new Kindle that’s being released on August 27th. I’m tempted to just return my Nook and wait until the new kindle is released. I like that it is supposed to be faster. And, it is really pretty.
