Cute Lola moment at the QuickChek the other day. I was standing in line behind a young hipstery guy and an older guy with a spanish accent. Lola came on, and all 3 of us started nonchalantly singing along out loud. 🙂

Thanks for the validation after all these years that I am not crazy! (Well, not totally crazy, anyhow!) Also, about copyright names in the UK: I heard that the song “Kodachrome” can never play in the UK (or just England?) due to the use of this word…unless Paul Simon were to release a generic version.

Well, “chrome” is a generic word, at least in the photographic community, meaning transparency film/positive film/slide film. So you could actually, if you wanted to, use the phrase “color chrome” and keep the rhythm and most of the sounds intact.
That said, it would be somewhat odd, as chromes are almost always color films (Agfa Scala is one defunct black and white chrome film that comes to mind) so almost nobody would really say “color chrome,” though it would be understood. (Maybe it could be used without sounding too stilted in a case of parallelism, like asking “what’s the difference in exposure latitude between color negs and color chromes?”) And, of course, it would be a bit jargonny. And “chrome” is more often used in a phrase like, “are you shooting chrome or neg?” or as an adjective “you got any chrome film around?”

Hah! Your post had me scrambling to look up “TIL,” which was most appropriate. (There’s also a bunch of “kinda rhymes” words depending on what kind of kinda rhyme the “kinda rhyme” is.)

I always understood it as a clip joint, where a customer pays for champagne, but actually gets coke.

Nope, gets played on the BBC, N-i-i-i-i-kon camera reference and all.
It seems it really doesn’t matter to the Beeb anymore: if the Fast Food Rockers can have their hit (“McDonald’s, McDonald’s, Kentucky Fried Chicken and a Pizza Hut”), then I think brand names must have been granted carte blanche!

BTW, the album _Lola Versus Powerman and the Moneygoround, Part One_ is worth checking out if you haven’t heard anything other than the title song. It’s Ray and Dave’s rant against the powers-that-be in the record business. Definitely one of my favorite Kinks albums.
(The lyrics in the liner notes say “cherry cola” and “dark brown voice”)

Yeah, it used to be a thing they stuck to rigidly (no product placement/perceived endorsement of brands in order to maintain their non-commercial status), but these days I’ve noticed that if, say, a BBC radio DJ or his guest mentions a brand name, then the DJ will say, for eg ‘other fast foods are available’ (usually tongue in cheek).
