Kitchen remodeling: give us your words of wisdom

Our contractor has our remodel on his web site.

Dammit. I always have problems posting pictures here.

Update: today was Primer Day, and also Rip Up the Ceiling and Walls Day. The electrician was here and installed 4 new can lights and plastered over where we already had 2 lights over where the sink used to be, because the old ones were bigger than the new ones that we bought. He also opened up all the switches and outlets and marked up where the new stuff is going. He and another electrician were here all afternoon until about 6:30 pm and are coming back tomorrow. Sigh…I guess we need to set the alarm so that we are bathed and dressed by the time they get here…but if it means the whole job is done faster, we will deal with it.

Also, a) my Spanish is coming in mighty handy, because most of the guys so far have very minimal English (except the contractor’s son who was here priming this morning and is a very sweet and soft-spoken guy). But b) the contractor isn’t here all the time, and sometimes the other guys have questions, so how on Earth does anyone oversee a job like this if they aren’t WFH? It’s just a minute or two here and there, but it really makes a difference. And c) next time I do a project like this while I am WFH, remind me to make sure some decent noise canceling headphones are available ahead of time.

Anyone have user tips for AirPods Pro? They just arrived tonight, and I think they are going to get a workout during this project. But they will be very handy for work generally, too; I have had lots of complaints about the sound quality on my crappy $20 over-the-ear headphones, so these should be a big improvement.

Wow, things are really moving along over here! Right now the guys are patching the ceiling and walls, and I think ceiling painting is going to be soon. The sink should arrive tomorrow or Thursday, and the tile has left Turkey via UPS and is currently in Germany - it should arrive late this week or early next week. The cabinets arrive Thursday, and the new window should be here around then, too. As soon as the tile arrives, we will go buy paint and grout. Assuming the cabinet installation is done next week sometime, then they can measure for the countertop, which should take 7 - 10 days if memory serves.

Woohoo, things are coming together! Also, we did a maiden voyage of a new Instant Precision electric Dutch oven for some jambalaya-ish improvised thing with smoked sausage, kale, rice, onions, and carrots. It was pretty tasty. Dinner was a steak broiled in the toaster oven, plus broccoli and the last of the pasta with garlic scape pesto. I think for people with no kitchen, we are eating pretty well, and with minimal takeout (though there was also a frozen pizza last week).

This is actually not so bad, though I will definitely be happy to have the new kitchen, or at least have the stove and sink back if it takes a few more days to finish the painting and backsplash. We ordered a couple of counter stools, too, and once everything is done, the kitchen table and chairs will likely go to my mom, whose table is falling apart. (Right now it’s in the living room window, because the dining room table has the microwave and some other kitchen equipment on it, and that sucker is huge!)

Hmm, I should buy a lot of sandwich bread this weekend. Our kitchen will be ripped up next Monday, and I’m okay with a lot of takeout dinners, but I don’t want to have to deal with that for lunch.

How exciting! Especially about the tile

Lunch can be leftovers from dinner.

With no microwave or stove to reheat them, that’s going to be less appealing. Our microwave is designed to be wall mounted, and it has to come down to do the backsplash behind it.

You’re lucky things are moving so well. We were without a kitchen for two years! It was rough. We love it now, though. Trying to forget 2020-2022.

It might be worth it to buy a $50 microwave and then gift it to someone.

I agree. Microwaves are cheap enough that you can just buy a tabletop model to use for now.

It’s only supposed to be a week… I think it’s cheaper to buy a loaf of bread and make sure we have enough peanut butter.

Or look on your local buy/sell/freecycle page, many people just give away their microwave when they move so there’s generally a few free or very cheap microwaves floating around at any one time in your local area.

last time we had an extra microwave it was a nuisance to give it away. We finally did, but it took a while to find a taker.

I have a friend who might be able to lend me a single plug-in convection burner, though. Of course, that only works with a handful of our pots…

A lot of my friends have these. I don’t know if there’s one for my town. The dump has a “take it or leave it” area, but it doesn’t do appliances. (and it’s closed for the winter.)

I didn’t realize it was just a week. I think you can manage.

Mine is supposed to take six weeks, I think. They start in late March at the soonest and I will see the final schedule then.

Yeah, six weeks would be a much bigger deal. I’m only replacing the backsplash and getting new under cabinet lights and electrical outlets, it’s not a whole kitchen remodel.

And we’ll have an electric kettle, an instant pot, and a toaster oven, although I’m not wild about using the toaster oven in the dining room.

The key there is “supposed to be a week”. In my experience, delays are common. So that week could easily turn into three or four.

It’s a pretty small job. I won’t be surprised if we end up waiting for a hole in the adjacent wall to be patched or something, but the contractor promises that the electrician, plumber (to turn off the gas to the stove) and the tile guy are lined up. I won’t be surprised if it’s a week and a half, but I’ll be pretty surprised if it’s more than that.

Treat yourself to an Instant Pot! I was an early adopter (back when you had to have them shipped from Canada), and it totally changed my life. Even when we have a stove, we use it multiple times a week because it’s so hands-off.

ETA: oops, that’s what I get for not reading the whole thread first. You’ll be fine with all those countertop appliances.

Yes, but Instant Pots are awesome. I got one a couple of years ago and it is a life changer.
