For Yes: Maybe.
the Mothers of Reinvention.
Not to mention Cristal Shit. (I didn’t understand the reference in the Dead Milkmen song before I got the Doors debut album.)
I suspect you already know that, for a while at least, there was a real band consisting of former members of King Crimson- the late Ian Wallace was the drummer, Ian Macdonald was playing keyboards, Peter Giles was playing bass, and Mel Collins was playing sax.
They called themselves 21st Century Schizoid Band, and mostly played older 60s/70s King Crimson material, the stuff Robert Fripp got bored with and no longer plays.
My favorite real example has always been R.E.O. Speed Dealer. Beatallica (also real) doesn’t count does it?
Unleaded Zeppelin
This reminds me of a real ad from the late 80s - it was for a knockoff “K-Tel” type collection of classic rock hits. The ad would show a bunch of old footage of hippies and 60s/70s folks with snippets of big hits like “Sunshine of Your Love”, “Eight Miles High” and “Piece of My Heart” and scrolling text showing all the songs included in the collection. An announcer would intone “All songs performed by THE ORIGINAL ARTISTS…”
The catch being that “The Original Artists” was a studio band who played all the songs in sound-alike covers of all the songs that appeared in the scrolling text during the commercial.
I recall once seeing a Yes cover band called “No”.
Don’t we pay rich white assholes to make laws preventing atrocious things? I know I do, it’s right on my paycheck F.I.C.A. Fuckin IRS Cheats All. Where’s my call in spot on Beck or Rush?
Seriously though, I bought a ringtone several years back (this was before being able to create your own) and it was a knock off. I was pissed that I was deceived of course. If I pay for a song, the band should get the money. I was most pissed about the studio band that (while trying to make a buck) was party to my deception, and kept alive such an awful practice.
Cover bands play EVERYWHERE every weekend, they almost NEVER pay ASCAP or BMI. They get a door fee, which is probably sketchy, but people are paying to see a whole show. They are “selling” the songs they play in a very loose manner.
The ringtone I bought was intended to buy the actual song that was presented in the title. I’m buying usage rights. Then I see it’s a fake recording of the song, what bullshit.
I can see a cover band playing many songs to entertain, and being paid to do so, but recording a song for the sole purpose of selling it under the pretense that it’s the actual song is despicable.
Sorry for the rant. /hijack
