Knowing movie - a little religious? - Spoilers

The closest I can come to making any sense of that is that it may reference that bit in Revelations, that goes "He that has ears, let him hear what the Spirit says to the assemblies. I will give to him a white stone, and on the stone a new name written, which no one knows but he that receives it.
[/quote]
Of course, this is specifically a white stone. Maybe a disagreement between the story and the property department? Maybe not connected at all… but the idea of those “with ears” for the spirit is closely connected to “those that hear the call.”

I liked the movie well enough by disengaging my brain a bit. I don’t agree that it is equally affirming of theist and humanist viewpoints - after all, the central conceit of the story is that Christian eschatology is fundamentally correct, and the implication is that if the protagonist had a little more faith, he would have somehow been perfect enough to hear the call and avoid the fiery end. The whiff of “Left Behind” annoyed me a bit.

On the other hand, I don’t seriously see it as anything but mindless entertainment, and don’t believe that it is earnestly advancing a religious argument. It’s a big, dumb movie. Sometimes mythology makes for interesting stories - it would be silly to give this movie demerits for using Christian mythology as the germ of an idea, but not have the same objection to any of the sci-fi epics that use Hindu, Buddhist, or Shinto ideas.
