All I have to say about associating your country’s name with that type of “cheese” is HA HA!

The “idiot” who created it doesn’t seem so dumb since we’re all talking about it.

> I second this. I don’t get a hankering for those plastiwrapped slices they sell in yet more plastic, but going to the deli and getting them to slice up some Kraft American in a decent thickness makes good grilled cheese fodder. It has more flavor that way. I could understand the WTFness about just eating it from the plastic wrap. The sliced shit from the deli is good stuff for sandwiches and the like.

Kraft sells that exact same deli cheese sliced & pre-wrapped.

> You may be talking about the cheese singles in the plastic wrap, but that is not clear from your OP. In my experience American Cheese is processed cheese. It is a blended mixture of cheese and I’m not talking about the pre-wrapped slices. Kraft Deli Deluxe is a processed cheese, but it is quite tasty for me. That pre-wrapped single slice garbage is awful.
>
> Maybe there are other brands that sell non-processed American cheese. I would like to find those, because I do wish to find good American Cheese. I love American Cheese. I do not particularly care for cheddar except for special things.

American Cheese (as opposed to Cheese Product) isn’t usually a blend of cheeses, or at least that isn’t why it’s the way it is. It’s cheddar that has been processed with water. It is often served sliced, right next to the Pasteurized Processed Cheese Product, or whatever.

I think we should take a little pride in the revolution America instigated in the re-purposing of what would otherwise have been factory run-off that would just get thrown away. Processed cheese has its place – some applications where its not actually being cheese comes in handy – and this opened up a whole new realm of treats, some of which are actually pretty good, and economical. Of course, processed cheese is often used beyond its optimal applications, but that too is economics – it’s cheap, because it’s made of industrial by-product.

And in theory I’d love to be involved more. I’d love to be able to withstand using recycled paper, clothing fibers, ect. And I certainly feel better about my junk mail if it’s printed on rough, grainy paper that will, I hope, be recycled again when I throw it out. As the green movement has taught us, our disdain for re-purposing so-called-garbage is short-sighted and self-destructive. Yet, for most purposes, I just prefer to use actual cheese. As long as it’s made in Wisconson, of course. I let other people accept the burden of eating the cheezeoid.

In their defense, Kraft does make one of the better “American cheese slices”. That style of cheese aint high society for sure, but it is edible and has a certain special flavor/style (kinda like fast food burgers, not REAL burgers in many ways, but edible with a special flavor).

Most “American cheese slices” made by other companies are gag worthy in comparision IMO.

This talk about Kraft cheese made me remember a hilarious incident, years ago. My uncle owned a bar, and would put out a sandwich platter at noontime. The sandwiches were simple-usually ham and cheese. one day, he sent a guy out to buy cheese and make the sandwiches-the guy bought the individually wrapped slices, and forgot to unwrap them! the looks on the drunk’s faces, as they tried to eat those sandwiches was priceless! 😃

Bravo. The sarcasm is wonderful.

Velveeta and others of that ilk have their places. When making a cheese sauce, I usually have to use skim milk rather than cream. Because of this, there are too few fat molecules to make a good, smooth sauce using only Parmigiano-Reggiano and other harder cheeses. In fact the sauce is prone to seizing and is ruined. However, if you add a bit of Velveeta, the emulsifiers in it help make a smooth sauce. Since it is so bland, it doesn’t affect the flavor from the better cheeses.

This reminds me of a joke I heard (maybe Jon Stewart, but I am not sure) around the time of the start of the Iraq war, all that Francophobia was being whipped up by the Pubbies.

In retaliation for the U.S. renaming French Fries as Freedom Fries, the French have announced that they will _not_ be renaming American Cheese.

I thought this was the SDMB, where people getting their panties in a twist about trivial things was one of the only pastimes we all could agree on. 😛

Seriously, after giving this much thought, my original hatred for this commercial ( **and others like it, for the poster who said I’m ignoring other egregious flag-waving commercials** ) has pretty much dissipated. Now I find myself wondering why the heck I even cared in the first place.

All of you who called this a stupid idea are probably right. I guess there are issues even too trivial for the Dope:rolleyes:

QFT.

Aside from mac and cheese, Kraft products and their ilk have a small niche that they fill in my culinary world. Aside from the pleasant grilled cheese effect, there is also a mysterious and lovely chemical reaction when such things are emulsified with substances that are derivative of jalapeno.
