# Krispy Kreme Donuts: Overrated?

I’ve only tried them once, and they weren’t anything special (admittedly, I didn’t get them hot, but I seriously doubt that would make any difference).
It looks like they have little variety, either. Plain glazed donuts are not my favorites. I’ll go for a Dunkin’ Donuts Chocolate Creme Filled, Creme Filled, or Cherry Cake donut any time.
Also, the name “Krispy Kreme” is particularly unappetizing. Not quite as bad as “Pecan Sandies” (if you ever bit into something with sand in it, you’ll know why), but it just sounds disgusting to me, like cream that’s been allow to go sour and clot.

To those Canadians extolling Tim Horton’s (Timmy Ho’s): I’ve found that Tim Horton’s donuts vary widely in quality from franchise to franchise. There’s one TH’s along the QEW, for example, which has pretty poor donuts–they’re gritty, almost sandy, in texture.
As for Krispy Kremes, I like them solely because they remind me of my favorite childhood treat, Morton’s Glazed Donuts. They were sold in the frozen food section of our local grocery store for four for 99 cents. You heated them in the microwave, and…wow, bliss. Really, KK donuts are a poor substitute, tiny rings in comparison to the substantial, sticky, Morton’s donut. But, I haven’t seen a Morton’s donut in years, so KK is all I have left to remind me.

I reckon that quote just about sums it up, to be honest. This thread scares the shit out of me - or rather, it scares me as to what sort of destiny the children of the future in the Western World are being thrust into.
As the quote noted, **grease and sugar** are NOT flavours. However, they ARE taste amplifiers. And what’s happened in the USA (in particular but the rest of the Western World isn’t far behind) is that 100% of the major food producers are privately owned corporations with one simple purpose in life - namely, to make more money. And over the last 50 years, those same corporations have discovered that adding shitloads of fat and sugar to everything they make, no matter what it is, amplifies whatever taste there is to begin with and BOOM! Off go the marketing people and the bucks start rolling in.
But seriously… think about it. This thread is a bit like discussing who should win the next season of “American Idol” - we all know that “reality TV” is the junk food of television, and yet, the marketing people are so pervasive, and so incredibly adept at getting us (the public) to tak about their products that they win every time - regardless of how lacking in substance their products might be regardless. And that’s what I think of Corporations who specialise in Doughnuts… they’re just the “reality TV” of the food chain… and to be perfectly honest, to get the same general benefits (health wise) as you’d get from eating a Krispy Kreme Doughnut, it’s far cheaper and more efficient to get a huge horse syringe, and fill it with a half litre of pure fat, and then inject that fucker straight into your veins - once a day.
Coz that’s what’s becoming of the US food diet folks. Whilesoever the major food Corporations of the USA are allowed to rape every last cent from the public by doping their food with shitloads of fat and grease and worse, whilesoever they’re allowed to do it with ZERO public backlash, well… as I said, you’re better off just injecting the horse syring full of pure fat straight into your veins.

Eating a warm Krispy Kreme donut is like eating a warm, sweet, fluffy cloud… mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. 🙂
Too bad I seldom get the opportunity (even though there’s a KK just a few miles away).
And really, the only flavor you need is the basic, no-frills Krispy Kreme. All the swirls and variations and whatnot the other donut places have are just distractions from the pure donutly bliss of a Krispy Kreme donut.

Another vote for “hugely overrated”. I love the varieties at Dunkin’s, but I even prefer Entenmann’s\* to KK’s.
Maybe KKs are a southern thing – like RC Cola, moonpies, chicken-fried steak, and mint juleps.
- Of course, they really benefit from reheating in the microwave.

I’ll throw my vote in on the “overrated” side. The glaze on the KK doughnuts is completely unappetizing, and the doughnut itself ain’t all that great. Dunkin’ Donuts taste better; bakery donuts taste better; grocery store/supermarket donuts taste better; hell, the boxed Hostess donuts that you can pick up at Wal-Mart taste better!

OH. MY. GOD. I was going to break the news to you poor, deluded people about the Round Rock donut. I lived in Round Rock back in the late 80s and very early 90s, and we ate a lot of these donuts.
Krispy Kremes are far better than Dunkin’ Donuts, but NO donut is anywhere near as fabulous as these.

I have to vote with **AnimistDragon** – NO doughnuts can _touch_ Round Rock doughnuts. I lived in Round Rock from '85 to '92 and every weekend would go down and get their heavenly glazed doughnuts. And then I left…and thought I’d never have them again.
Until this past Sunday – we were driving east from San Antonio, stopped at a convenience store, and there was a big rack of hot, fresh Round Rock doughnuts! I squealed like a little girl, bought a dozen, brought them home, and have been plying my coworkers with tasty bites of their heavenly golden (yes, the dough is _yellow_) goodness. We’re already in deep discussions about opening a local franchise.
Someday, watch my words, the whole world will know of the true doughnut delight that is the Round Rock glazed doughnut.

The coffee at KK is perhaps the best cup of Joe I have ever had. Seriously, their coffee is excellent. As far as their fat pills go, yeah they are good too, too good. :o

I think KK is FAR overrated.
Who the fuck puts cream IN a donut, then puts chocolate frosting ON the donut, then coats the WHOLE donut in glaze? Its sick.
May as well shovel spoon fulls of sugar in your mouth for breakfast instead.
Gross.
Though DD is pretty bad too, they do have the Chocalte Cream filling which is good when its fresh.

I live in Round Rock, about ten minutes from the lone star bakery. And while I love and adore round rock donuts, and any and every other thing that is made in that bakery, I must say the best donuts I have ever had were from Stan’s donuts, in Santa Clara, California. They are incredible.

I had my very first ever Krispy Kreme last year. Eh. I didn’t really see the appeal. I mean it was OK for a doughnut and all, but way way too sweet for me.
But I’m also more a fan of the denser, more substantial doughnut-ish things. Not cake donuts or those horrid grocery store long johns and persians. And not fluffly cotton-candyish things like KKs.
Crullers, baby. Oh man. A good cruller, with some heft to it? Thems good eats.
