I told **burundi** about this thread last night, and she said that my donuts were probably the best she’d ever eaten. Not that she’s biased or anything. 😉 But then she said, “Come to think of it, it’s been about a year since we had a donut party. . . .”
So guess what we’re doing next Saturday?

Look, if you haven’t eaten a fresh KK then you aren’t in a position to judge. After a KK cools, the glaze hardens and a lot of the flavor goes out of the dough. When they’re still hot, you eat them and the glaze melds with the pastry to create this impression of sweet, doughy air. They’re incredibly light in that state.

Sorry, there may be a debate about what donuts are better, but there is no debate about tea. Tea is sweet. Period. Its in the Bible somewhere…try back in Leviticus or thereabouts. I mean, c’mon, EVERYONE knows tea is sweet.

**plnnr** , first of all, it doesn’t say that in Leviticus - at least not in **MY** interpretation. In MY interpretation, it says UNSWEET. Tea is UNSWEET. I guess it just goes that way with religion - everyone has their own translation. 😉
Oh - Krispy Kreme = way, way, way overrated. ( **cmkeller** , if you’re ever in town, I’ll buy you a donut and coffee at DD!) And to whomever first mentioned it, good call on the weird aftertaste - what, exactly, IS that?

I lived in Dallas about 3 years ago when the whole KK fad was just catching on over there. I can’t tell you how many times I would overhear someone at work bragging about how they went down to Arlington to the only KK in the whole Dallas/Ft. Worth area to stand in line for an hour+ to get a stupid donut. Bragging about standing in line for that long for a donut? Honestly. I have no cite or anything, but my guess is that KK donuts became popular because the right person (read, famous) somewhere along the line decided they liked KK donuts the best and then KK marketing took it from there. Then their popularity spread faster than they could build new stores in different locations. Then people actually decided it was cool to wait for hours outside a store for a stupid donut, and regardless of whether they actually found it superior to other donuts, told all their friends how marvelous it was! I can’t imagine them saying anything besides that, given that they just spent a good portion of their day waiting for a donut. Not wanting to be left out of the cycle, more people decided they needed a KK donut also. Me too! Me too! Wash, rinse, repeat, and here we are today.
For the record, I’ve had hot, fresh KK donuts. They are donuts. If I’m in the mood, anything fried and glazed is close enough for me.

The best donuts in the world are from the Sweet Shop in Greenfield, Indiana. No chain donut could ever compare.

Well, I’m not a donut fan, so that colors my sentiments. To me, a KK donut is pretty much the same as a DD donut or the local mom-n-pop-shop donut. That having been said, I do prefer some variety – if someone’s got a box of donuts from somewhere, I’d rather have a chocolate or a blueberry-filled, or whatnot. You know, not the same thing every time? To all of you that insist that a plain glazed KK donut is all there is to the world of donuts … that’s awfully limiting, don’t you think? Are you the same people that order vanilla shakes and can’t imagine, say, chocolate or strawberry?

I don’t know where you guys are going that KK has no variety. At my local shop, there’s well over a dozen different kinds you can get, ranging from the normal (glazed, cruller, chocolate glazed, chocolate cake) through the filled (lemon, blueberry, raspberry, bostom creme) through the slightly weird (blueberry, maple glazed, etc.) through the questionable-to-nasty (cheesecake, pumpkin pie, etc.) They have three different roasts of coffee, all of which are acceptable and none of which are particularly exciting, as well as other standard drinks, and the best damn unagi rolls this side of Okinawa.
Okay, I made the last bit up. But they’ve got variety.

I’ve had two of them, in fact, and both were horrid. I don’t understand why they must coat them in that vile crap. I like my doughnuts without lamination, thanks very much!

The most vile thing about Krispy Kremes for me is their damn name. WTF? Krispy? Kreme? KK?
Did someone fail to realize that “crispy” and “creme” are still alliterative without having to spell them incorrectly?
And aren’t these donuts supposed to by “light and fluffy”? What does crispy (or excuse me, “krispy”) have to do with donuts? Crispy is for potato chips, not donuts.
And what does creme, or even cream, much less “kreme”, have to do with the usual donuts KK makes, glazed? Okay, I can see it with cream-filled donuts, but _crispy_? How does the idea of cream somehow made crispy relate to donuts? And how is that appetizing to anybody?
Yes, I know, many stupid places change perfectly serviceable English words in order to, I don’t know, make them cuter or something. But if KK had at least spelled the words properly, then their acronym wouldn’t form a combination of letters which is a subset of the acronym for an extremely hateful, racist organzation.
Or did they just have something against sharing letters with the Civilian Conservation Corps?
No, I don’t watch to research the real reasons for anything about this, whether it is available somewhere on the web or not.
I just want to rant about something pointless!

Been a few weeks or so since I’ve been here, and I am very disoriented!
Well, earlier this month I saw an extremely large line of folks waiting at the KK counter at Harrods in London (UK), of all places!! Been a while since I had one, and I thought they were good. Top Pot in Seattle has a great donut, as mentioned earlier. It all depends on taste and whether a person is on the Atkins diet, I suppose.

KK donuts are pretty good, though I’ve had better. Yes, I HAVE had hot KK donuts. I think that they’re overrated. The local Albertson’s makes a better donut, to my way of thinking. And believe me, as an insulin-injecting diabetic, if I’m gonna eat a donut, I’m gonna make sure that it’s the very best tasting donut around!

The old theory is that creatively spelled words make for stronger trademarks, should a trademark-owner have to defend it in court. And suggestive (as opposed to literally descriptive) names are more flexible for marketing. Think of 20 brand names, and consider how many of them are made up words, spelled strangely, or nonsensical. Duracell, Pepsi, Microsoft, Reebok, 7-11, etc.

Sorry. Another vote for “what’s the fuss?” The one time I tried KK, I threw it away after two bites. It had a weird, off taste and was so sugary I could barely even taste the weirdness.
