With Alice in Wonderland it’s a bit more specific, though. The hookah-smoking caterpillar was an actual character who was probably using opium (like a lot of middle class people in Carrol’s time did), so it’s not like it’s just “this is weird, he must have been on drugs.” That, I agree, is usually a pretty much meaningless accusation.
