Lady Dopers- What does the state have to put on the table for you to make more babies?

Either than, or perfect artificial wombs so the state can manufacture replacement citizens on demand. I mean it works so well in science fiction.

Romania tried something a bit less extreme than that. It didn’t work out so well.

Well, it removes some people from the population to compensate for the addition a new child makes. Most importantly, it provides the moral balance of allowing me to do something (excruciatingly cruel mass murder) proportionate to what I feel forcing me to be pregnant would be.

I am 50, but I am some kind of circus freak, because my periods are still coming like German trains. I assume the government would want me to have all the tests to make sure I wasn’t having a baby with a chromosomal defect, and I’m on board with that.

Here’s what I’d need:

A full-time maid/cook for 9 months.

3 full-time personal assistants working 8-hr. shifts, and some part-time weekend people.

All bills paid during the pregnancy, medical, personal and household.

A part-time assistant for my son, in case I am less available for him during the third trimester.

Round-the-clock nannies for the baby after it is born, and for the first two years. I am willing to breastfeed for up to two years, but I want someone else changing diapers. Paid tuition at the best preschool in town (It’s a Jewish preschool, and I can get it enrolled). Three hours a day, five days a week, and then nanny care. I really don’t care if it bonds with the nanny, as long as whoever it is is getting paid well enough to hang in for the long haul, because I will be 63 when the kid hits b’nai mitzvah age. In fact, I don’t care if the state wants me to put the kid up for adoption by a young, infertile couple (as long as they are Jewish), and I will still donate breastmilk for a year.

$1 million tax free. I would prefer a lump sum, but we can talk.

That happened to a friend of mine. She’s that daughter of a twin, and had two boys (not twins). She and her husband had one more, hoping for a girl, and had twin boys. I told her so what? She makes great boys-- and it’s true, her sons are all really wonderful boys. But she started working on getting her husband to try to adopt a girl.

I have a boy, and I think sons are great. It’s kind of weird-- all my life, I thought I’s want a girl if I ever had a baby-- then when I was actually pregnant, I wanted a boy. Hormones, go figure.

Y’know, ZPG, folks say that the stereotype of a man-hating, violent feminist is a Straw Man, and oftentimes it is. But every once in a while…

We are going extinct. :stuck_out_tongue:

The best moral balance for an evil act is more evil!

Speaking for my wife…

We’re waiting to have children until I finish grad school and get a vaguely stable job. At this point, we’re vaguely thinking that two children is the right number for us. However, since we’re not starting until we’re in our early 30s there’s a very real possibility that we will have less.

We probably would have had children already if there was the right mix of paid parental leave and subsidized childcare.

In our circle of friends, family, and colleagues, many other couples are also waiting for circumstances that only start coming together around age 30. Good paid parental leave and subsidized childcare would certainly increase the overall fertility of this group.

In an ideal world, any governing body seeing that these very horrible conditions (being able to torture and kill other human beings) are the only ones under which I could be persuaded to have a child would realize that 1.) the means does not justify the ends and withdraw their pressure to breed and 2.) hopefully gain some insight into how horrible child-bearing is for women that do not want to be pregnant.

I have no children. Every reason there is not to have children applies to me. And I’m 62.

The only way I’d even consider it is to put a fertilized egg into me, put me into a medically induced coma, and wake me up a year later. Oh, and get rid of President Trump permanently

Agree with previous comments about Germany being a test case for checking off boxes, but still struggling. (Wallet-protecting ideologues, please stand down…not coming for your wallets…yet.) And with the USA Congress’s policies being dismally worse than Germany’s, thus creating a highly disincentivizing climate, post-fertilization of the egg. (Yup, now you can start having goosebumps.) And with the USA not being an agrarian society lacking healthcare, where child morbidity rates necessitate large broods if one were to gain enough “owned” field hands to till the soil. And with modern women with even mediocre education understanding more fully the world into which we would bring kids.

As part of that modern world, we have the USA president we have because largely rural and/or stressed folks believed him when he said he’d bring jobs back. Totally ignorant of data showing that automation, not immigration, overwhelmingly caused job losses. And that predictions are that robots will be doing the vast majority of jobs by the end of this century, if not sooner. Meaning governments will have to be supporting all of us non-robot-owning workers. Or risk bloody insurrection as people fight for food and water to survive. (There, Ideologues, is your hair standing on end, now?)

So, Spain, relax…you’re ahead of the curve. You won’t have as many worries as countries like ours with administrations against modern approaches to family planning. (There’s a clue there, Ideologues, on how to avoid bloody mayhem and keep most of your wallets’ contents…be for family planning like conservatives of yore.)

On your decreasing birth rate, Spain…educate, educate, educate the babies you do have. They’re going to have to be razor-sharp to keep up with the robots’ broods.

Just riffing and mocking your “moral balance” silliness, though I’m still curious – is it particular men you want to torture, or will any man do?

Not female but I feel that anything short of a solid upper/middle class salary simply for having a child for at least 21 years would be a bare minimum. Basically about 75k a year simply for being a parent.

I’m 63 and my baby-making stuff was removed of necessity when I was 35. The state could give me all manner of enticements, but they won’t entice a baby out of me.

When I was of age and capable, I wanted 2 kids. That would have been it under any circumstance, but I only have 1 offspring, due to the removal of the equipment. I look at friends and family putting multiple kids thru college and I’m glad my baby is graduated and gainfully employed without either of us going into debt. Huzzah for scholarships.

To be honest I had not truly thought about it until you asked because I have always assumed no sane society would agree to such an arrangement. However upon consideration, if suddenly I was transported into some mirror universe where my proposal was accepted, I would have to be able to choose the men I killed because I would want to target the political and social leaders (or their sons) reasonable for me having to be pregnant.

Okay, though I think you are missing the point of the hypothetical in the OP – it’s not about what would force you to give in, but rather what incentives would you willingly take in exchange for reproducing. The answer for you might be “nothing, not even a billion dollars”, and that’s a fine answer if that’s the case.

I would consider being able to legally torture and kill certain men whom I consider menaces to society (individuals I know beyond all doubt have committed horrible crimes of rape, battery, and murder and will continue to do such crimes until physically prevented) the only incentive conceivable to me of being worth the horror of being pregnant. Pregnancy absolutely disgusts me, but for the opportunity to rid the world of certain monsters I would be willing to endure it.

I’m having a hard time envisioning a government listing your desired incentives on a birthrate-promotion bulletin…

Imagine giant bulletin boards proclaiming: Want to get revenge on that creating ex? How about the guy who date raped you on prom? Talk to the Population Boaster Office about the Automatic Pardon Program. Bear children for the State and get to take the revenge of your dreams! No legal repercussion!
