Somebody is planning to do an all-girl remake of _The Lord of the Flies_. Unlike with _Ghostbusters_, it seems that even women [think this is a stupid idea](https://www.theguardian.com/film/2017/aug/31/lord-of-the-flies-remake-to-star-all-girl-cast).

Unless they go for a “survivor meets women in prison” mix. Having the girls all played as hot teens (by 20-somethings) where they wear improvised bikinis and have hot lesbian sex between fights.

It wouldn’t be a \*good \*movie, but it would be a _popular_ movie. And, of course, it would be a remake in name only, sharing nothing of the original source material.

I don’t trust Hollywood. At all.

I say have the Wayans brothers write it and call it _Fly Girls_.

“What if a bunch of _girls_ were stranded on an island _Lord-of-the-Flies_-style” is actually an interesting premise and would make a good movie that I would want to see if it were well done. But yeah, I don’t trust Hollywood to do it well. Especially if the filmmakers are male.

</div>

Yeah, the premise might be interesting if done well, but if done well, it would be different enough that you couldn’t call it a remake. And to get the necessary amount of development, you’d probably need to make it a novel before you could even think about doing it as a movie.

Or, _[Beauty Queens](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/9464733-beauty-queens)_, the book that is essentially exactly what they intend to remake.

As the [(woman) author said](https://twitter.com/libbabray/status/903083556943130624?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw), “Someday, when I get my dick back from the cleaners, I’ma take Hollywood by storm.”

The latter half of Marianne Wiggins’ _[John Dollar](https://www.amazon.com/John-Dollar-Wsp-Contemporary-Classics/dp/0671039555)_ is pretty much _Lord of the Flies_ with girls. There are a couple of adults - a governess and a badly injured, disabled male sailor - on the island with the girls, but they don’t have much, if any, control over the kids.

Isn’t there already a castaway film with all women (except one guy) that MST3K covered? They’re showgirls or something.

There’s plenty of room for multiple movies about female castaways. The problem with this one is there are lots of sources of inspiration for the next female castaway movie without resorting to another remake.

Well, if my wife is to believed if a bunch of girls were put in a _Lord of the Flies_ situation the result would be a nice orderly society which would inspire the world rather than a descent into primal chaos.

I consider that result highly improbable.

Yeah I don’t get the whole “Women would form perfect societies without men” thing. Even if that were true in peaceful times, odds are things would get just as bloody in a disaster situation where you’re also dealing with severe resource scarcity.

Three precursors come to mind:

_Horrors of Spider Island_ (1960) - Showgirls crash-land on deserted island. Their manager is bitten by a radioactive spider, turns monstrous and proceeds to act in a most unprofessional manner. Okay, so there’s no spider-monster in LOTF, but what story would not be improved with the addition of one?

-

Mysterious Island of Beautiful Women\* (1979) - Nubile women trapped on an island are visited by some has-been/never-were thespians and together, they battle “head-choppers.” What more could anyone want from a movie?
_Late August at the Hotel Ozone_ (1967) - A girl gang roams a post-apocalyptic landscape. They are led by an older woman who remembers how things were, while prepping her younger charges to survive in a dying world. Serious, bleak and with a disturbingly graphic scene of animal slaughter included for verisimilitude, not exploitation.

But the “monster” in LotF isn’t actually a monster threatening the boys. They are all their own worst enemy.

Also, I’m not terribly surprised that this, of all sex-swapped stories, isn’t being embraced by the corresponding group. I’m sure nothing satirical would.
