A lady from one of those groups that consider themselves self-appointed guardians of morality, the people who want to force us all through a time machine back to 1950, was on Hardball tonight bitching about the new TNN animated show Striperella. Her main problem was that it’s a cartoon. Oh, I must have missed the news, I guess some association of family entertainment producers must have copyrighted the process of animation, so as to limit the art entirely to child-friendly programming. No? Then shut the fuck up, you teetotalling bitch. You’re afraid 8-10 year olds are going to watch this? Why, just because it’s animated? Jesus fuck, lady, if all I had to do to get 8-10 year olds to watch a show was make it animated, if content didn’t matter at all, then I’d be swimming in money. What the hell makes someone think an 8 year old would actually be interested in that show? Then you’re worried that there are promo spots for the show on in the afternoon and early evening. Again, you must be operating under the crackbrained assumption that some 8 year old is gonna think, “Bugs Bunny sucks, I’m gonna stop watching Boomerang and turn on TNN!” And what the fuck is an 8-year old supposedly watching on TNN in the afternoon, so that he’d see that spot? Then you actually expressed concern that the show might appeal to 16 year olds. NO SHIT, SHERLOCK! And what the fuck is wrong with a 16-year-old watching this show? If you want to run your home like it’s the Donna fucking Reed Show and stop _your_ kid from watching this, go ahead and be a asshole to your own kid. But in the rest of the world, 16-year-olds like sexy stuff, they’re teenagers, they’re interested in their own sexuality above practically everything else. If this lady is such a teetotalling freak, I fear what her children will grow up as. If anybody needs to watch sexy television, it’s those kids. How the hell are teenagers supposed to learn about sexuality, if they don’t watch some risque programming now and then? Surely it’s better that then being out there fucking real live people. When I was a about 12, I started watching bad T&A flics on Gilbert Gottfried’s TBS Up All Night, then graduated to Showtime and Cinemax, and eventually got tired of it altogether. It’s a phase, a natural one. Every kid I knew went through a couple years where he wanted to watch racy movies, was fascinated with sex, but every one of them grew out of it. And ultimately, I just have no patience with this idiotic assumption that anything animated is somehow “geared towards children”, or that it would even be appealing to children if they _did_ end up watching it. Disney can keep living in the boring world of family-oriented bland poorly-styled animation, but that shouldn’t prevent people from taking the art to more interesting or mature levels. Parents, if you insist on being teetotalling control freaks with your children, then do us the favor and learn that “animation” does not automatically equal “kid-friendly programming”. ---

Risque cartoons: Fritz the Cat. Man, I loved that movie (on big-screen, as in drive-in theater). I dunno about young kids watching Striperella, mine are young enough that they wouldn’t get it. I’m going to have enough problems convincing the husband that he’ll be in the doghouse if he suggests we watch it! The mere fact that it’s a cartoon shouldn’t invoke anger from anyone; if it contains adult content, then it should be viewed as such. ---

Well, while this woman seems to have the common prejudice that “cartoons are for kids”, (which isn’t really all that uncommon, and explains why cartoons for adults don’t do all that great in this country), what’s wrong with her setting standards as to what her kids will watch? Isn’t that part of what responsible parenting **is** …paying attention to what your kids are doing, and setting standards and rules so that the values you feel important are passed down? ---

I got my ass completely flamed on a message board once for “suggesting” it was not a good idea to let your pre-teens watch SouthPark. A poster with a 7 yr old and an 8 yr old burnt me to bits - I guess she assumed I was speaking directly to her. But then she herself went up in flames from the others on the board and she was never heard from again. heeheehee I LOVED the reaction from the idiots who took their kids to see the SouthPark movie when “Uncle Fucker” started . Jackasses. ---

For years, parents groups have been trying to sanitize all TV to a “G” level. They’ve complained about and/or tried sponsor boycotts on everything from _The Simpsons_ to _Married with Children_ in an attempt to ensure that TV is a safe baby sitter so they don’t have to take the responsibility for checking what their children are watching. If you don’t like your child watching shows with content like _Married with Children_, change the channel. Or better yet, spend some time doing something with your kids. In the end, TV is a business and what makes a profit will be sold. If its content is obscene or – _gasp_ – adult-oriented, don’t watch it and don’t let your kids watch it! (And don’t assume its OK because it has a nice name like _Married with Children_, so it must be a family show.) I, for one, don’t want my TV viewing dictated by 6-year-olds. ---

I have to admit, as a parent of young kids I find the advertisement of adult shows during “kid” times to be (to put it mildly) rather annoying. But I don’t for a moment think what is shown should be based strictly on my feelings of what is okay and what isn’t. If “they” want me to watch, they’ll show what I want to see. If I don’t like what is shown, I just don’t let my kids watch it. That includes the commercials. If most people are okay with advertising adult content shows during “family” times, who am I go argue?
