I haven’t actually known any people who are part of a fanbase. I will say that here on SD, whenever someone starts to talk about Star Trek in the context of the rest of culture, I completely skim the post. ---

Second jam band fans, especially those who follow Phish, Widespread Panic, and moe. . It’s one thing to be a fan of a band. It’s another to follow them from city to city, obsess over collecting every concert tape, and like what **Big Bad Voodoo Lou** said, play the seemingly self-contradictory role of an affluent hippie. A close second are “Slashdotters” – fanatic Linux users. Third are Dale Earnhardt fans who are _still_ mourning the crash of Number Three. ---

Fans of any sports team that blinds them to that team’s faults. I had a friend who was a diehard Atlanta Falcons fan. Depsite their many years of suckage in the 80’s, it was NEVER their fault. He could come up with the most bizarre, far-fetched excuses for these guys. Accept the fact that your team might just suck. ---

Well there’s this group of people that have gatherings based upon this strange ‘answer me this’ column in alternate news publications… 😛 But what’s scariest are the Batman fans who think that vigilantes are a [viable](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=333310&highlight=vigilante) form of law enforcement. ---

I don’t have a specific fandom to nominate, but… the thing that annoys me about fans in general is when they assume a hostility or rivalry that doesn’t need to exist. I particularly remember a post on the SDMB a few years back pointing out that **Revenge of the Sith** was being released on DVD the same day as the special extended edition of **Return of the King**. This poster, who was pro-LOTR, and apparently believed that a rivalry existed between LOTR and Star Wars, was bemoaning the fact that ROTS would probably outsell the ROTK EE, because the ROTK was an EE, and that this would artificially inflate the ROTS sales numbers when compared to ROTK, and that the Star Wars fans would presumably use this to lord it over the LOTR fans. Wha? You like LOTR? Great. So do I. You want to go to conventions? Well, I might do that on a whim some time, but it’s not really my thing, but I will CERTAINLY not judge you for it. In fact, if it’s something you love and you get to spend time with similar people, go for it! Have a great time. But what makes you think you need to construct this artificial rivalry? Why can someone not enjoy both Star Wars AND LOTR? Why must they be battling for nerd primacy? To misquote a classic **The Onion** article, “when will the lamewads and dorkwads sit down and play Magic: The Gathering at the table of peace?” ---

Any fans who take it beyond fun. I stay out of discussions of which is better, Trek, Wars, Buffy, etc… because as long as YOU like it, that’s fine by me. Likewise, when you tell me I’m lacking in some way because of MY OWN PERSONAL TASTE, then you need to go to hell and sit on a firecracker. Taste is taste. If I think what you like is lame, no use trying to convince me otherwise. Same vise versa. (I don’t know how many times I’ve had to say this, irl and online…) ---

I heard that some Whedon fans boycotted the _Serenity_ TV show because a character they liked on _Buffy_ was killed. That’s the sign of a delusional mind, IMO. ---

No mention of Apple yet? The more fervent end of the “fan-base” has to be the most annoying on Earth. Though, the linux users **elmwood** describes aren’t too far behind. Other than that I’m bereft–the sort of personality cult fandom described isn’t IMO as strong in Britain as in the US, not among people I know personally anyway. ---

I’ll just say sports fans in general. Say what you want about the trekkies, goths, otaku, Whedonites, warsies, furries, fansubbers, Phisheads, or My Little Pony aficianados, at least thier hobbies don’t lead them to burn down major cities.
