Zim has a MASSIVE fanbase, but you won’t see much of it if you’re over the age of 15.

> Fan fiction in general, and slash fiction in particular. Um, what’s the point? For me, the best part of writing fiction is making up the characters, getting to figure out all their backstory and little quirks and speech patterns for yourself. Why would someone cheat themselves out of that? And why do they have to make 100 million livejournal communities based around this crap? And slash, what the hell? Is it supposed to be hot or ironic or what? **I just really don’t get the point in stealing other people’s good characters for your bad fiction** , sexual or otherwise, and then getting so obsessed that you spend all day pairing up characters in your lame LJ communities.

May I steal this for a sig line?

Art Bell or “Coast to Coast” am fans.

The problem is I am a bit of a fan myself and when a fanatic finds out they assume I belive everything on the show and go on forever it seams about Major Ed Dames, Richard C. Hoagland’s [enterprisemission.com](http://enterprisemission.com) and how the moon is some spaceship.

An annoying fan base that I somehow am a part of.

That brings to mind those rabid _ **Daily Show** _ fans. Guess what, guys? It’s neither the first, nor the best of that genre of show. While I’ll admit to a negative bias here (because I find it neither witty nor interesting), I’m not going to be convinced by anything that it’s as GREAT as some people (even here) are making it out to be. It’s simply one more spot on the TV line up.

So, go ahead and like it. Talk up a storm about every episode. Just don’t act so agrieved when someone else says they _don’t_ prefer it to a satisfying bowel movement, okay?

Yes, fanfiction is childish, purile, and smack a bit of wank, but I happen to think that it’s great as a springboard into writing. I certainly wouldn’t have been interested in developing those particular talents if I didn’t have an addiciton to imagining Character X in Situation Y. (Not like that, you pervs.)

That said, I HATE^HATE lemons/yaoi/noncon (nonconsentual) pairing 'fics. Ugh. I’ve had the misfortune of reading some doujinshi that made me want to scrub my brain with lye.

I love the Daily Show AND a hearty bowel movement. Why can’t I have both? 😃

(I was going to say ‘cake and eat it too’ but that would have been somewhat nasty given the subject)

I think any fanbase that can’t accept that others aren’t into the same thing. When I say I don’t really like that show/band/movie I don’t want to be convinced how wrong I am.

This one guy. Just him.

He’s the only annoying fan base I can think of.

He’s a guy I work with, who was born in Arizona. He’s a fan of college football (Notre Dame), basketball (Lakers) and pro football (Cowboys).

Obviously he’s the ultimate bandwagon fan, rooting only for the teams who are advertised heavily and favored to win. Jesus, buddy, didn’t you know you can only jump on one bandwagon at a time?

They’re really into _The Nightmare Before Christmas_, music like KMFDM and the Insane Clown Posse, My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult, comics and branded clothing from cutesy-scary things like [“Kreepee Lenore”](http://www.bdcouvertes.com/bdlire/kitty53.jpg), [Johnny the Homicidal Maniac](http://rydia.net/bipolarama/jthm/noise-2.gif), all that [“Emily” shit](http://images-jp.amazon.com/images/P/0811840689.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg), the entire existence of the mall clothing store **Hot Topic** , and judging from that store’s website’s current front page, they’re almost entirely to blame for the existence and upcoming marketing blitz of [Corpse Bride](http://www.hottopic.com/).

See, I’m the exact opposite. At least these guys can concieveable be fun to hang around with. Remember the tv show “Twin Peaks”? It was certainly different from regular tv when it came along, and I watched it just to see what David Lynch could get away with on a network. It soon developed a fan base of people who seemed, frankly, pathetic to me. They latched onto every line as if it were Shakespeare’s best, called themselves “Peakies” and got together in groups on viewing nights, clutching logs and dressing like the characters. Okay, I never actually met these people, but I know they were around, and that knowledge was intensely annoying by itself. It always bugs me when I find that idiots like something I also like. (Though I got bored with “Twin Peaks” before long; it started to seem like a pointless exercise rather than a story.)

Duke fans don’t rate too highly either, but at least they’re not Carolina fans.

Goths annoy me, too. They’re usually quiet, though. Carolina fans, OTOH, never shut up.

The more I learn about classical music, the more I fear I am becoming one of them. I will sometimes complain loudly about a certain arrangement or composition of a piece in front of my recreational-listener friends, only to have them mumble “I don’t hear anything wrong with it.” And then I feel like a pretentious ass ☹

Sweet gods, YES!!! I live in South Florida, and while it seems to have subsided a bit, time was when you couldn’t get away from that twinkly, sugary music. Every party, every beach, and every boat would have Buffet playing ad infinitum. I learned to tell rum-sodden Parrotheads that “Sure, I like Buffet” just to avoid the inevitable accusations of communism along with a possible fistfight. I’m exaggerating a bit, but just a bit.

I did get free tickets to a Buffet show once and I was rather suprised how many fights there were. Much worse than most of the metal and punk shows I’ve seen. I have to admit that I did take a certain dark pleasure in watching drunken middle-aged yuppies try vainly to beat the snot out of each other.

My pretension can kick your pretension’s ass, too.

It’s a situation that happens when a field becomes both very competitive and very subjective. A few achieve primacy by being virtuosi; for most musicians, all that’s left to them is to work harder, and for critics and aficionados, to engage in a never-ending dance of zealous opining and damning-with-faint-praise.
