I know it’s fighting the hypothetical, but I wouldn’t call being afraid of a gun pointed at your head as a “failure”.
I meant that he was chosen to be green lantern before Hal but failed the test so now he is trying to instill a complete lack of fear on his sons. Obviously it only worked on John.
I’m pretty sure that John’s dad was not a rejected Green Lantern candidate. I guess it’s possible, anything is possible because the writers can go in any direction they want, but there was no indication of that in the show and that doesn’t match any of the previous stories in other media.
It just seems like the test coupled with the question is TOO specific to be random abuse.
It wasn’t random. His dad was in the USMC (he was wearing the uniform) and presumably this was part of that. Maybe he had PTSD, maybe he was brainwashed into being some kind of killing machine by the military and was trying to pass that down to his son. That’s some kind of back story we haven’t been shown. But I don’t think it had anything to do with the Lanterns, and certainly nothing that suggested that he himself had been in consideration.
Maybe John’s dad was trying to push his son into being the next Hal Jordan, I’ll concede that. It’s definitely possible. That could be part of what was going on there.
Also, the kids knew the dad didn’t want them watching the Hal interview. He knew right away when he came in what they were doing.
Am I the only one who, during that interrogation scene, half expected Hal to ask the alien what it would do if it ran into a tortoise in the desert?
The Shazam films? Or at least the first one, which is the one I watched. I thought it was pretty solid. But while somewhat gritty re:the villain, it seemed a family-friendly sort of gritty, ending on the literal triumph of a found family.

Yeah, Superman is a straight up reboot of the DCU. They’ve kinda worked Suicide Squad back into it by way of Peacemaker, but I think it’s otherwise irrelevant.
That seems to be the case. in 2016, we see a bit where Stewart is talking to his dad on his cell, so you know they are on speaking terms. It seemed abusive to me at first glance, and second and third, but I imagine that was his dad drilling the fear out of him. In a super f#cked up way, of course.
I don’t recall seeing if Stewart had a ring in 2026 but that would really suck to train all this time for a ring and ten years later still not have one. My initial guess is that William Macon has the ring and wants to use it against the alien presence on Earth. I want to know how he would have been able to murder a Green Lantern and take his ring though.
The “test” had been going on for years… almost as long as Hal had been around. And he had literally JUST revealed it on TV. There is no reason for his dad to be doing THAT particular test to his sons and asking THAT particular question if he didn’t already know what it meant. He was training a new Green Lantern before Hal revealed what the test was to the public, he had to have already known and failed it.
I mean, the new Superman and Peacekeeper season 2 are set in the same universe as this, so somehow the modern period on this series needs to fit in that bowlcut Nathan Fillion has a ring, sooooo…
Yeah, and they retconned Peacemaker in the process. Originally, the Justice League (from the Zac Snyder film) showed up at the conclusion of Season 1, but years later when I rewatched that season with my wife they’d changed it to the Justice Gang.
Peacemaker himself auditions for the Justice Gang in a later season but it goes poorly as you’d expect.
The episode on Max still has the Justice League ending. They’ve just updated on the “Previously on” for the Season 2 premiere to be the Justice Gang.
How long had Hal been around? All I remember from the tv interview was that he had been a masked superhero for a long time.
All sorts of backstory possibilities comes out of that. Who knew his identity before? Probably people in the government, since Sr. know the name Hal was going to reveal without watching. Why was he revealing his identity now? Did he have to clear that with anyone? Didn’t he have any friends or family who could be harmed - the traditional comic reason for a secret identity. Does his ring tell him of danger, like a spider-sense? Otherwise, why wouldn’t Hal be subject to a surprise bullet? Can it keep others unharmed? Sr. seems to know his son has been selected, so isn’t John whole family now at risk?
Clearly, most of this will be told in future episodes, in the three timelines. All this needed exposition already dragged down the first episode somewhat, though overall it nicely dropped us into the middle while making us interested in the past and future.
10 years. All the time skips on the show are 10 years. The young John scene is in 1996, Hal had been around 10 years before that, 2006 is the last time Hal backed up his consciousness to the ring, 2016 is when the alien incident takes place and 2026 is when they find him dead.

Young Hal in 1996 looked like that guy who had the magic newspaper. I don’t know if that’s relevant.
