# Larry Clark is how old?

I know, I shouldn’t be ageist. But I was surprised.
I’ve seen _Kids_ and _Another Day in Paradise_. I just assumed that they were the work of some angry young punk just out of film school. But I just got a DVD copy of _Bully_ and I was checking some info about it on [imdb.com](http://imdb.com). And I happened to glance at Larry Clark’s birth year.

I thought it was a typo. But I checked and they’re standing by it. Clark was already past fifty when he made his filmmaking debut in 1995 with _Kids_.
I haven’t been this surprised since I heard that Kevin Smith was a virgin.

(Sorry to bump an old thread; I haven’t quite figured out what the etiquette is about this.)
I just watched _Bully_, having seen _Kids_ a couple years ago. But I knew before I saw _Kids_ that Clark was of another generation. Several of the other writers on _Kids_ were of the generation of the characters, though, including Harmony Korine and Leo Fitzpatrick (who played Telly the sleazebag in _Kids_ and the “mafia” hitman in _Bully_).
Ugh. Repulsive movies, both of them. And I mean that in the best possible sense.

Clark had been known in “the art world” for many years before _Kids_ came out.
He first came to prominence in 1971 with _Tulsa_, a documentary portfolio of 50 black and white photographs. The earliest photos in _Tulsa_ are from '63.
