Larry Storch (F-Troop) has died at 99

It is interesting how much better The Mary Tyler Moore Show was; that started just 3 years later.

That Girl was a big step up from The Donna Reed Show, Hazel, Lucy, or Jeannie but Mary Tyler Moore Show was a huge step up from That Girl.

Much about That Girl didn’t hold up to logic, but it was a 60s sitcom. Most didn’t hold up to logic or were boring Pleasantville shows.

OT but when the internet came along for the benefit of us obscurantists, it was curious to learn that Lew Parker only had 14 imdb.com listings and only 10 on ibdb.com, and no other occupations listed elsewhere.

Lew Parker was a stage actor. Hired off of Broadway for the show.

If you remember the fairly famous episode with Ethel Merman, Lew Parker was apparently friends with her since the 30s when they were both starting out on Broadway.

It certainly was, insofar as Mary Richards left home behind her and really worked for a living. To my mind, though, she spent way too much time dating losers and wondering if she was ever going to meet Mr Right.

They made cabbage rolls together in Ann’s kitchen. That was a good episode from the start of the second season.

F Troop was a damn funny show. Regardless of whatever the PC crowd may say of it, it still is.

WTF? Where did this come from?

Its portrayal of Native Americans was … somewhat less than flattering.

Funny as hell, yes, but still unflattering.

It portrayed the Hekawis as greedy and scheming, but they were on a completely equal footing with the whites. Who were greedy and scheming too.

When did you figure out what the “Hewakis” meant?

I believe the phrase you’re looking for is “on the make.” It was Sgt Bilko in the Wild West.

“Hekawi” was a sanitized version of Johnny Carson’s “Fugawi,” which he was forbidden to say once the network execs caught on. :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

“Where the Hekawi?”

Funnier than Sgt Bilko too.

I don’t remember it portraying the Indians as any worse than the ‘palefaces’, except for using some pretty old stereotypes.

I just don’t know why it was brought up in this thread.

I mean it was a pretty bad show, writing and acting-wise. If I were the head of Australian programming, I would bring the following 50s and 60s sitcoms over first: The Honeymooners, I Love Lucy, The Addams Family, I Dream of Jeannie, Bewitched, Get Smart. Gilligan’s Island is about a tie, and the Munsters were maybe worse? Not sure – it has been a long time.

Listening to Krazy Kat, I always thought the Hekawis were one of the lost tribes of Israel.

You left out Amos ‘n’ Andy.

See, it’s all a matter of taste. In pound for pound laughs, I think F Troop beats all those shows you listed except maybe The Honeymooners.

I also like The Munsters way better than The Addams Family.

Apples and oranges, really. Two completely different styles of humor, but I loved them both when I was in fifth and sixth grades.

There was a wonderful Frontline documentary years ago about a woman’s secret background. Larry Storch played a beautiful part in her life.

We gave them F-Troop, and they gave us Skippy The Bush Kangaroo. (The theme song still pops into my head occasionally.)
