I feel like we’ve been thrown two big curveballs so far… both of them MUCH bigger than “oh, wait, there’s yet ANOTHER person”. So if something surprising happens next, I don’t think it will be either a woman or a man just wandering into frame. ---

So far, I’m lukewarm on this. I had high hopes and it’s just ok. With regard to the absence of bodies, I wish they had used an alien invasion that just took all humans away. Ludicrous, but cleans up a lot of questions regarding where all the bodies are. ---

Well, he talked to God a lot, and when God didn’t answer he finally gave up. Poof, a woman shows up. So, they could be going with a God angle, or just something generally supernatural. That would explain the lack of bodies & animals etc. God snaps his fingers and you are now the last man on Earth, until he introduces more, of course. ---

Except that at the beginning of the first episode, it says something like “2020, 1 year after the virus”. So I think it’s established that a virus wiped out humanity. I suppose God or some supernatural thing or other could then dispose of the bodies, but if you’re going to do that, why kill them with a virus first? Regarding the lack of animals, I thought it was curious when Carol made the raisin balls and said something like “since there will never be another meatball”. Was that a clue that all animals have been wiped out? If the writers wanted to establish that, why not just have the characters talk about how all the animals are gone? If all the animals are indeed gone, could the environment be able to support humans long term? How much plant life depends on animal activity for growth and reproduction? Long term, won’t all the CO2 be depleted without animals breathing? Are there still pollinating insects? ---

Ah thanks. I forgot the virus part. Then we’re back to it just being a nonsensical sitcom. The poop pool would be filled with mosquito larvae and the neighborhood would probably be unlivable by now. ---

I’m quite sure that there is no consistent and logical explanation for what happened to all the corpses, why there weren’t massive fires when power plants failed, why there wasn’t evidence of rioting or looting as society broke down, etc. But as long as they aren’t trying to change the rules once they’ve established them, I’m fine with it. ---

Right. Think of it like you would **Gilligan’s Island**. How come their clothes never wore out? Why did the professor take all of those books on a 3 hour tour? Why did the Howells have all of that money and all of those clothes with them? There is no explanation. It’s a sitcom. ---

Yeah. Somehow, it was funnier with the beard. Not much interesting happened this episode. There’s obvious tension between Phil and the new woman, but he’s feeling guilty about Carol. From the promos, it looks like _maybe_ things start going his way next week, but what happens after that? ---

Clearly not much happened this week, but there was still enough that was funny that I was never checking my watch or anything. I felt like the scene at the end where suddenly Melissa is confessing how horny she is came way out of left field (and led to a silly and cliched denouement) but most of the rest of the episode was hilarious. The contrast between Carol’s reaction to Melissa and Phil’s was comedy gold. ---
