From the Article:*
McCain criticized Democratic contenders for offering what he called costly universal health care proposals that require too much government regulation. While he said he had not studied Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton’s health-care plan, he said it was “eerily reminiscent” of the failed plan she offered as first lady in the early 1990s.*
-[John McCain] said of her [Hilary’s] proposal.
That right there is why I cannot get irked at the rhetoric. If you take your opponents words and then simply use them against him… That’s just skillful orating right there.
I’d be willing to consider maybe a tiny issue here if McCain hadn’t said those words himself when talking about Hilary.
Now, all Obama has done is create an allusion to McCain’s words, and so yeah- bummer, Paulin, but this issue isn’t about you.
When I first heard Obama’s pig/lipstick comment, I immediately assumed he was refering to Palin as a pig given the famous lipstick/pitbull comment.
Now, I can’t believe that millions of Americans didn’t take it the same way. The line is so old and cliche yet the audience creamed in response. They got the innuendo. And it was good for a laugh.
Obama is very clever and articulate. No doubt he is a lover of the double entendre. He is not stupid.
Hey, I think it’s great. I love seeing a Democrat throw a few punches this time around. Obama takes initiative, which I like. If we lose it won’t be because Obama sat back and pulled a Kerry while his chances went down the tubes. You have to stick up for yourself.
anybody consider that palin might have set obama up for this one?
after all, the pitbull thing wasnt a great comment, maybe it was chosen for its connection to a saying obama liked to use. mccain supporters were very quick to jump on it, like they were waiting for it maybe?
either way, i think the comment was in reference to their politics not the persons themselves.
an if pain is willing to call her self a dog (with a reputation for being mean, cruel, and stupid at that), why does it matter if shes called a pig?
Why on earth is pig even considered a sexist name for a woman(as opposed to just a generic insult)? I’ve only ever heard men called that, when they’re being lechers.
And the Republican’s feigned outrage at being insulted while they hurl every piece of slime they can find, true and completely not, at Obama, is rather amusing. Hopefully people aren’t stupid enough to fall for it.
Anyone who thinks Obama was calling Palin a pig must really think Palin is indeed a pig, because there’s no way Obama would stoop to 8th-grade insults after spending 20 months, millions of dollars, and countless hours campaigning. So now that Palin has used the word “lipstick,” anyone else who says it must be insulting her?
I said this in the “Sex Ed ad” thread. McCain’s people can have fun with the “lipstick-pig” comment, but when they get all dour & denunciatory, they lose the battle.
It is clear they have reduced Palin to nothing more substantial than a pair of painted labia; every time they hear “lipstick”, they think “Palin”. No wonder her biggest supporters are right wing males.
Biden asks if Palin cares so much about special needs children, why does she oppose stem cell research? Camp McCain’s response?
HOW DARE YOU!!!
Edited to clarify-- Biden didn’t even mention Palin’s name but somehow just mentioning special needs children and the political issues that surround them is sinking to a “new low”.
OK, good to know. When I say community organizers are worthless (and God knows one of them surely was), I’m not actually referring to Obama. It’s a metaphor.
The primary difference is that the “lipstick on a pig” line is always a metaphor, and “community organizer” is never a metaphor. Other than that, they’re exactly the same.
I agree with the OP. If there was any doubt (can’t say there was much) about who I was voting for, this manufactured bullshit outrage just sealed the deal in favor of Obama.
I place the blame for this completely on the media. Anyone with a three figure IQ knows that this is bogus and that the McCain campaign jumped on this because it was the best excuse to rev up their faux outrage machine that they’ve found to date. No doubt those in the media know this too- so why do they pour gasoline on this fire?
Because the media don’t see telling the truth as their job anymore. That’s the entire sorry truth.
It’s not their job to uncritically report a lie because somebody said it. It’s their job to identify lies.
There was a segment on CNN a day or so ago asking “Why can’t Obama make the fact that Palin lies stick?” I have to wonder why that’s Obama’s job and not CNN’s job to point out all the lies she’s said.
Like it or not, because of the Pit Bull/Lipstick joke, Palin now owns both of those nouns for the next several news cycles.
Was Obama referring to Palin directly? - No.
Was he calling her a pig? - No.
Was he making a subtle dig in her direction? - In all probability, yes. He’s smart enough to know that if he says “lipstick” people will think about the Pit Bull/Lipstick joke.
Does he have anything to apologize for? - No.
Was he calling McCain a fish? - If you think so, then you may find the following advice not only helpful, but potentially life saving: First breath in, then breath out. Do not repeat underwater.
Am I actually agreeing with Scylla in a political thread? - Son of a bitch… I am.
They just played a bunch of clips on the news…one where McCain used the ‘lipstick on a pig’ metaphor in reference to Hillary Clinton’s healthcare plan…and a few others where Biden and Obama used it in other contexts. I don’t recall anyone whining about it in the past.
But in spite of it being a fairly common metaphor, I do think Obama was referencing Palin with the comment. But so what? Palin’s been slinging mud at Obama…should he be prevented from responding just because she’s a lady? Now THAT is insulting to women. To Sarah Palin: If you can’t take the heat, stay out of the kitchen…
As far as I can tell, Obama was riffing on Palin’s line about the difference between a pit bull and a hockey mom, which is lipstick. If he is going to go directly from that to references to “putting lipstick on a pig”, it is hard to avoid the impression that he is calling her a pig.
Unless you are a brain-dead liberal, of which there is no shortage.
Any chance Obama can turn this fake controversy around and bring up the pig line in context to all of Palin’s pork? Something along the lines of, “I did not intend to belittle my opponent’s vice presidential pick. For some reason all the pork spending, including the bridge to nowhere Palin wanted to build, put a porcine connotation in my head.”
