In “Crime Scenes” the Law & Order coffee table book (highly recommended reading, BTW), Dick Wolf, gives the full backstory on every main character from the beginning up to last season’s cast.
With Abbie Carmichael, he wanted to provide a different sort of counterpoint to McCoy, in that his previous two assistants felt he often went too far in pursuit of a conviction. In Carmichael’s case, if Jack was "Hang 'em High, she was “Hang 'em Higher.”
Completely agree with this, and that’s why i’m so happy that i got cable recently and can now catch up with all the old Chris Noth/George Dzundza/Paul Sorvino/Jerry Orbach/Ben Bratt episodes.
Give me a fucking break! Could they just, for once, choose a Deputy ADA who:
a) doesn’t look like a refugee from a Victoria’s Secret catalog
and
b) looks old enough to actually have finished a law degree?
