Did I just see him on “Larry King Live”? I thought he was dead. What were three guys playing accordians doing on LKL anyway?

Rilch, like many people, may not know just how popular Lawrence Welk once was. In 1971, his variety show was, by FAR, the #1 rated show in all of television. Yet, ironically, it was cancelled at the height of its popularity… because his viewers were mostly elderly folks, and those viewers are of no interest to most advertisers.
Don’t feel too sorry for him. Welk went into syndication and continued to shoot new episodes for many years to come. He made a fortune!
At any rate, Lawrence Welk had a HUGE number of die-hard fans. You just don’t know many because they’re all much older than you. I suspect millions of seniors tuned in to Larry King to reminisce about their favorite entertainer.

I remember watching Lawrence Welk with my grandmother when I’d spend the night at her house. I’d fall asleep watching it sometimes. I still remember the end song “Good night, sleep tight. And pleasant dreams to you…”

Among those die-hard fans were/are most of my Italian relatives. I know quite well who he was; I was just surprised to see him on TV, since I thought (correctly, after all), he was already dead.
I know who the Lennon sisters were, too. 😛
