Yeah, but isn’t psychological therapy something that’s pretty individualized based on problem, history, situation, etc.? How much can you really say that anything has “no rational basis” for working?

And placebos in psychology aren’t as simple as a sugar pill. I can’t imagine how you’d design something like that (then again, I’m not a psychologist).

I saw one in downtown Madrid last month and almost fell on my ass from the surprise. They used to be classified as a dangerous cult. The bottom floor looked like an Apple store for psychoillogical tests, only with less people (thank Cibeles).

How do you know it was Scientologists? It would have been a good idea for a domain name squatter as well. The whois information just shows DomainsByProxy.

You can also do it with working therapies - tell one group that the therapy has a high rate of success and another group that it has a low rate of success. The actual rate of success will vary somewhat depending on expectations.

You’re off-topic in this thread, despite what I said in my earlier mod note. Please take this discussion elsewhere – probably IMHO.

Her main claim to fame is _The King of Queens_. Maybe not a show you watched but it was on the air for nine seasons. She also had a talk show for a year.

But I do – this is Cafe Society, not GQ, GD, IMHO, or the Pit.

If you want a general discussion, pls. start it elsewhere.

Why not just move the thread then? I’m not sure how we can discuss Leah leaving Scientology without discussing Scientology. It’s not like we were discussing Scientology in and of itself. We were discussing Leah’s choice to leave the organization while still appreciating some of it’s beliefs. It is impossible to discuss that without getting into the plausibility of that. It’s like starting a thread about Richard Gere’s Buddhism without being able to talk about whether his sort of practice counts as real Buddhism.

This is a really good post. My first instinct is to think of CoS as a cult. But, you’re right, the content isn’t the same as the organization’s action. I didn’t see it that way, until reading this. Thanks for being smart.

One unfortunate (or fortunate if you are a Scientologist) thing about this is the fact that Leah Remini most likely has already hit the high point of her career. After co-starring on a hit show it is unlikely she will strike gold again. Therefore, if her career takes the most likely route, the CoS will be able to claim to their followers that they were the reason for her lack of success.

They’re probably just upset because they’re not getting her money any more.

There’s an organization called the Cult Awareness Network that was kidnapped, for want of a better term, by Scientology.

> **[Cult Awareness Network](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cult_Awareness_Network)**
>
> The Cult Awareness Network (CAN) was an anti-cult organization created by deprogrammer Ted Patrick that provided information on groups that it considered to be cults, as well as support and referrals to deprogrammers.
> It was founded in the wake of the 1978 cult mass murder/suicide at Jonestown, Guyana. After CAN lost a lawsuit and filed for bankruptcy in 1996, Scientologists were able to acquire CAN's name, phone numbers, assets, files and records, and reopened the organization under Ted Pat...

The funny thing is, she was one of the celebs that came on the [BBC Panorama episode about Scientology](https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&ved=0CC8QtwIwAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DrFRSt_viosc&ei=agLmUbmoN8aryQH0noCYDw&usg=AFQjCNHX--LM5-oaF0_m0Ght3zImEcOOOg&sig2=o2AxTIUm7wvvrDRwc6dHaA&bvm=bv.49405654,d.aWc) with John Sweeney. I seem to recall she was pretty haughty about Scientology, etc.

I saw a car with a Scientology symbol on the back today in traffic. Never seen that before!

Well, thin crust pizza is a mainstream religion… flat bread was just made up by some science fiction writer. But it seems to be popular among celebrities.
