The last word I remember being surprised with out of the blue was “litigious.” I’d been out of college for a couple of years and had simply never heard it before.
pwned!
I’ve seen the word before but never knew what it meant until today.
I learn two new words every week when I listen to “Says you.”
I know “tyro” from high school English class, maybe freshman year. It was in our vocabulary workbooks. I’m actually surprised at how often I come across it.
Thanks to watching the hilarious QI, which can give Cecil a run for his money:
Tmesis - the only word to start with the letters ‘tm’ means to split one word by inserting another word, such as ‘abso-fucking-lutely’
Hurple - one of two words that rhymes with purple, it means to walk with a limp
Chilver - the word that rhymes with silver, it is a female lamb
Must have typed it wrong; I could swear it came up with nothing when I did that search.
I know the word “tyro” because every year Monmouth Park runs the Tyro Stakes, for two-year-olds (that’s the age at which they can first race).
There used to be a lot of races for young horses that made reference to their age/inexperience. The Kindergarden, the Youthful, the Young America, the Hopeful(which is still run) and a whole bunch of races called the ____ Juvenile.
