in Britain aunt is generally pronounced ant–unless you’re _posh_. Belly and Tummy seconded. ---

I cannot stand the word “chicken”. I don’t know why. I hate hearing it, saying it, or even looking at it. I almost dislike eating chicken just because the word comes up. ---

“February.” Same as **Slainte** ’s complaint with _rural_. Trips you up so you’re stuck either playing the rubber rollaround with your tongue or simply going with “Feb-you-airy” like so many people I’ve known. Ghastly word. ---

Not really a word, but I hate “suposably” instead of “supposedly” and when “of” is used intstead of “have” as in “I should of gone.” ::shudder:: grrr ~Ferry, making her debut appearance on Straight Dope ---

**Lib,** I applaud and second that. [hijack] What’s up with people pronouncing the word “nuclear” as “nuke-ya-ler?” Even my fiance does it…and when I rib him about it, he says “New-Clear.” Not the proper “new-clee-er,” but “New-Clear,” like it’s an acne medication. Ditto for “jewelry.” It’s not “jool-er-ee,” dammit. It’s “jewel-ree.” And “realtor” being said “reel-a-tor.” It doesn’t have three syllables. It really doesn’t. Where did that third syllable come from? [/hijack] Feel better now. Just had to get that off my chest. ---

For some reason the pronounciation of “medicine” as “medsin” really gets on my groat. Luckily I live in Scotland where most people allocate the word its full complement of 3 syllables. ---

I hate the word **ideal** when used to express the term **idea**. Example: _“I don’t know why you didn’t wanna eat here, it was my **ideal** to come here in the first place.”_ First came across that one in Ohio. Couldn’t believe my ears, or the fact that I was told either word could be used. [blink] Second: the word **suite** pronounced as **suit/**. Example: _“I’m tired of the furniture in my bedroom, so I’m going to head to the store and buy a new bedroom **suit**.”_ Shudder. That one I found in Tennessee. Sweet. ---

About my parents’ sisters: I say “onts”. Not “ants”, and not “rhymes with flaunts”. Vowel sounds the same as in the word “on”. To me, “dog” and “log” do not rhyme at all. “Dog” has the “flaunt” sound, and “log” has the “on” sound. Oh, and for those of you who say “flaunt” as “flont”, I’m trying to think of a good word for the “aw” sound in my “flaunt” but cannot. ---
