Went back and got this… The Rocky Horror duct tape thing was definitely preferable ☹ Back in late 69’ or early 70’, I was in Viet Nam. I want to tell you about the time I killed a little girl. You see, we were working with the 11th Armored Cav, I was riding on top of a armored personal carrier, we were moving down a long straight road that had many small hills in it that would at times let you see a good ways down the road. Far ahead, I could see two small children along the edge of the road, they were waiting for us to come by, they were going to beg for chop-chop (food). So I started to work my ruck-sack around to get a can of C-ration’s out to give them. I choose ''ham and mother fucker’s, which is military for ham and lima bean’s, which tastes like hell after 15 or 20 years in a can, hence the name. This is one of the heavier cans, weighing in at 5 & 1/2 oz’s. I thought they would be happy to get this. How wrong could I be? So, we are approaching their position, moving by at about 35 mph, and I give my '‘gift’ a gentle underhand toss. Both children see me toss the food and have big smiles on their faces, the girl who was older, maybe 9 or 10, (who really knows) had shining black eyes and a big smile, she looked directly into my eyes, thanking me with a look, about that time, that god-damned can sailed right threw her hands and smashed right into her forehead, just above the left eye. With that weight and speed it cut a huge gash and crushed her skull. She was instantly slammed to the ground. She was dead before she hit. There was a big fight about it later, my Lt., tried to say I had done this deliberately, I, of course told him no, that I had not. Some of the men were on my side, some were not, and some didn’t care at all that a child had been killed. There was a big fist - fight involving about 6 or 8 men, it resolved nothing except it was enough for the ones who complained about it. I often think about that little girl, I wonder about many things, do you belive in ‘‘fate’’? I don’t know even now after 32 years if I do. It’s very strange. That nameless little girl still lives with me, so strongly in my memory, it breaks my heart sometimes. I have thought so many times to even the score. But life is strong, and who knows what is right and what is wrong. Well, …I don’t know what else to say to you, another nameless person,…just this,…guard yourself well, you never know when it could be you. ---

I got: Sometimes, when I look around the table at my friends? hamburgers and chicken salad sandwiches, I think of the animals held in industrial farms. I think of how the farms force six birds to live in a cage the size of a folded newspaper. I think of how their beaks are burned off at birth to prevent them pecking each other and how with time their feet grow attached to the wire floor of the cage. In raising turkeys it?s not an uncommon practice to use steroids, increasing the size of the birds to such an extent that their legs are not able to bear the weight, thus crippling them until slaughter. I think of how the waste produced from an average industrial farm in a week is equivalent to the waste produced by Danville in a week. I can?t in good conscience condone these activities. Sometimes people ask me why I don?t drink milk or eat eggs. I tell them about how dairy cows are pumped full of steroids and antibiotics in order to produce more milk. A lot of times the cows? udders are so full of milk that that they drag along the ground. The steroids given to hens to increase egg production are transferred to human bodies when the eggs are eaten. These hens also spend their entire lives stuffed in a small cage, mutilated and drugged, with the cages stacked on top of one another so that the excrement from the top levels fall on the bottom levels. I have heard people call themselves vegetarians. Then they clarify that they eat fish. These are not vegetarians. They are people who promote animals suffocating to death after having been ripped out of their home in a net, or worse, with a hook through the lip. I remember watching my uncle skin fish alive and I know this is a common practice. I don?t eat fish for these reasons and because there is no water left on earth that hasn?t experienced its share of industrial or nuclear waste. By this point, my reasons for not wearing fur or leather should be obvious. If I won?t eat the animal then I damn sure won?t wrap myself up in its miserable flesh. There is a brand new McDonald?s going up near Lowe?s. The people of Danville now have another source for obesity and heart disease. It is yet another way for American citizens to contribute to deforestation. Did you know that a starving third world village could be fed if the field space required to raise one steer was instead used to grow wheat? Did you know that two thirds of America?s grain exports go to feed genetically engineered livestock?not to feed people? This is the tip of an iceberg of travesties against animals and people promoted by the meat industry and secured by ignorance. People think it is their right as Americans to eat meat at every meal. I say it is our responsibility as human beings not to and thats it… ---
