The undeserved mocking now when he hasn’t actually done anything will dilute any - all - the well-deserved mocking later when he does screw up. It will just be dismissed as , “Haters are going to hate.” ---

It may be petty stuff compared to the things he will be able to do as president (although he has already made some consequential decisions as president-elect, such as picking Cabinet appointees), but, for example, if his New Year’s message had simply read “Happy New Year to all,” no one would be mocking it. ---
