> To make matters worse, many boneheads who buy a small or toy breed dog don’t understand that _it’s a fucking dog._ It needs to be trained just as a larger dog does, not only so it behaves but so it knows its place in the family - an untrained dog is generally not a happy dog. Little dogs also need exercise just like their bigger cousins, and being carried around in someone’s arms or bag does not count as exercise. Oh, and of course being small doesn’t excuse them from health laws as well as common courtesy toward people with allergies for instance; the one thing I don’t like about (well-raised) Chihuahuas is their ability to shed their own body weight in hair and dander every single day.

Exactly. If a Rottweiler barks and lunges at a stranger, then the owner will correct it so that it doesn’t lead to tragedy. If a Pomeranian yips and nips at someone, it’s considered cute, and little Poopsie is just asserting himself. This leads to a bratty dog that thinks it owns the house.

Much as I hate laprats and much as dogs of any stripe do not belong in restaurants, please do not leave them in the car. It’s just cruel. They could die. If you simply MUST have a laprat, and even if you consider them an accessory to your ensemble, leave them at home.

That’s pretty much what [happens](http://pics.livejournal.com/helenseidolon/pic/00036w91).

I’ve never brought my dog anywhere dogs are not allowed. Anywhere dogs are allowed, we have as much right to be there as you do.

When we visited our daughter in Germany, there were dogs on the bus, dogs at restaurants, even dogs in the supermarket - and they were all perfectly behaved. What do they know that laprat owners don’t?

When we were raising guide dog puppies we always brought them into restaurants, and for the most part no one knew they were there. There is usually a nice table for them to go under - out of the way and not involved with the food.

Ethics question. Do you call the authorities to have them rescue the dog from the car and charge the owner, or do you wait for the dog to die before you call the authorities to charge the owner, or do you rescue the dog so that you can use it as a little league soccer ball?

Sure you do. But you don’t have any business bringing an untrained dog that lunges and bites to a public venue. Otherwise, I retain the right to dropkick it into the coming millenium.

I was in Whole Foods two weeks ago at the check out lane, and there goes one of the Paris/Brittany rat-dog totin’ wannabes, strolling along like she and little Poo Poo owned the plce.

I have a husky-malamute mix who only sheds twice a year for six months at a time, a little hairy dog and three cats, so I am pretty well used to pet hair in my food.

My pets. Not hers.

So as I checked out, I asked the cashier if I could bring my big ol’ husky in on his leash. She looked at me like I was from another planet and said no. I pointed to Barbie and pal and asked why I couldn’t if that person could. She kinda mumbled something and rushed me through. I should have raised a stink, but didn’t bother. Bad on me.

I don’t think people see those little guys as real dogs. Maybe.

Hey, there’s not much to do up there so you have to make your own fun. Was it around the 4th of July by any chance?

Yes and no. My dog is still a puppy and likes putting things in her mouth. She doesn’t bite down. I will tell you this if you ask me before playing with her. If you come up and play with her without asking, you get what you get.

The advantage of “laprats” is that they cannot lunge out of one’s control.

I think you’d have to punt. It’s hard to get a good bounce for the drop kick.

I live in Texas. A dog (or a child) can die in a parked car in just a few minutes in the summertime. People don’t believe us when we say it gets really hot here, but it DOES get really, really hot here, and a parked car, even if the windows are partly open, will become a slow oven very quickly.

I don’t even leave soft plastics in my car on a summer day. The heat will ruin it.

It doesn’t even have to be all that hot. “The major cause of heatstroke in dogs is leaving a dog in a parked car. Even with the windows cracked on a 70° F (22° C) to 80° F (26° C) day, while it may feel comfortable outside, the inside of your car can heat up to over 100° F (38° C) in minutes! As you can imagine, with that fur coat on, your dog’s body temperature rises very quickly.”
One [cite](http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/heat.htm) of many.

It was that week. They were like that for more than one night. I don’t know what night the pile of burning trees was sent into the surrounding area in explosions. It was a place I had been to once and refused to go to again. This time it sucked even worse, and the family that went had the explosions.Last time they had a floating platform in the showers because the sewer backed up into the showers when in use. Yes the showers had up to 6 inches of water on the cement floors with wood platforms over the cement instead of fixing the long term problem and health hazard. They had an outhouse when I was there for the people when the bar wasn’t open. The outhouse had a door that didn’t close. One seat was missing and the other like the rest of the outhouse was made from grey weathered splintered wood. Large spiders were all over the place, and wasps had a large nest in the place. It was obvious that people would shit in the woods before using it. We put up with a lot of bad places and hardships when ATVing, but that place was too much.
