At one job a coworker went to Fairbanks where the high was around -10. Low around -30. She bought a new coat for the trip. She was going to run out to her car without her coat to grab something and the locals told her don’t do it, you might freeze to death. ---

One of my uncles (and his family) was stationed somewhere in Alaska in the very late '60s. They had a poodle; when the K9 would go out to “bizness,” they said she would just walk slower and slooowwer and sloooooooowwwwwwer and then just sort of stop and they’d have to pick up the pupsicle and bring her in. Not long after, my aunt said the lack of sunlight was making her crazy, so they transferred out. ---

It really is stunning to me that humans could have survived in these extreme harsh climates in past centuries before the advent of reliable heating, etc. Yes, I know, “fire”, but what a major PITA that must have been! And much had to occur away from close proximity to the fire. ---

**Northern Piper** , at least you get to go somewhere warmer, compared to where you left from. I’ve got some business travel coming up in February. I get to go to Edmonton. I doubt that it will be warmer than here. Most likely, it will be colder. ☹ ---

Darn, I was hoping you might be headed on a vacation my way. The weather right now in East Hawaii is monumentally awful - deluges of rain that let up momentarily only to begin again a few minutes later. Everything is wet. My hair, which is not thick, took about 2 hours to air dry. Doors and drawers are all stuck because they’re so swollen with moisture. But, at least it’s warm 🙂 ---

It was only the wind chill. The ambient temp as I was standing there in the war waiting for a cab was only 34 below. ---

Heh. Next week I’ll be travelling up to Michigan to visit my parents. I’ll be going from 22°C (cool for central Vic, AU in the summer) to a high of -4° C. I’ll be packing along my old parka and other winter gear, you can be certain. Might have to pack an extra bag to fit the stuff, though - it’s pretty bulky. (Gotta love that old parka - I had it when I left Illinois, some 30+ years ago, and it’s still in good shape.) ---
