Okay, patriotism (not jingoism) is a-ok with me BUT I pray that this national crisis will not propel Lee Greenwood into another 15 minutes of fame. Go ahead and play “Kung Fu Fighting” or The Captain and Tennille’s greatest hits over the loudspeakers–I can live with the pain–but Lee Greenwood…no, NEVER NEVER NEVER!!! ---

On the local news last night, they played his latest variation on his song - apparently he had a fit of inspiration. I wanted to retch! Apart from the obviously manipulative nature of it, the lyrics were so forced and contrived to my ear. I’m sure it will be treated as an anthem… I want some earplugs now. ---

At this point, I’d like to extend a special “What the fuck were you thinking?” (this is the Pit, right?) to\*\* Philosophocles\*\* for reminding me of this song. Here’s what might be my last confession before being stoned by my fellow dopers. They played this song on Thursday (I was just wondering when it would come up on the playlists) and _I cried_. And not the way you guys are crying, in pain and disgust. I cried with emotion. In my defense, I was living in the conservative south and dating a called-up marine reservist when the gulf war started. It was like a state law that you had to get choked up when you heard that song. Old habits die hard. Please be merciful. I am not in control of my emotions. ---

I’ve had that horrid thing running through my head ever since a “friend” forwarded to me the URL of a web page, one of those schlocky tribute sites (I’m not against tribute pages, but this one was REALLY cheezy, angels pasted into the smoke from the WTC, that sort of thing. Bleah.), and I scrolled down to the bottom, and it indicated that that song was the music. I immediately closed the browser window, but it was already too late. I didn’t even have to hear the damn song to get it stuck in my noggin, just seeing the title was enough. Lord help me. ---

Here are the two parts of that song that bug me the most (besides the way it sounds): “…I’m proud to be an American, where _at least_ I know I’m free…” _At least_!!?? Yeah, no big deal. “…If I had to start all over with just my children and my wife…” Wow, now _that’s_ really saying something. Why don’t you try starting over _without_ your children and your wife? Sheesh Just the corniest, tritest, least profound song ever passed off as a patriotic anthem. _Please_ let them come up with something new this time. ---
