I can’t say for sure they’re liberal but I really enjoy the music of Nicole Nordeman and Chris Rice Their lyrics are much more nuanced and about the spiritual rather than specifically praising Jesus. Some lyrics I get the impression the fundies would object to.
Yeah. Pride (In the Name of Love) draws parallels between Jesus and MLK, for example, and Sunday Bloody Sunday features this couplet:
The real battle yet begun (Sunday, bloody Sunday)
To claim the victory Jesus won (Sunday, bloody Sunday)
Lamia, with obscure Lyrics like Vedder’s, deifferent people can surely hear them and get different meanings. I don’t doubt that Vedder is agnostic. Hell, I’m an atheist, but I could still write a meditation on Christianity from the perspective of a Christian.
Both Bruce Cockburn and Steve Earle come to mind. Both deal with left-wing political themes more often than Christian themes, but they’ve both done some surprisingly good Christian songs.
