Lefty/righty guitar or ukulele playing

Guitar handedness question

Not a guitar player, but this has always puzzled me. Why is it a right handed guitar player uses their left hand at the guitar neck to control the notes played ? I would assume a right handed player would want to use their right hand for the finger work there. Or, is the strumming the more complex part of the playing ?
