Ok, but they are putting both Trump and Bessent (Treasurer) signatures on the notes, sothey will be just as legal as having only Bessent’s signature. The “no living persons” only applies to *portraits*, so imagine a case where the image wasn’t quite the standard portrait image. Say, it was at 45 degrees, would that mean it wasnt a protrait because its not face on or at 90 ?
But see the treasury statement.
I believe (told it by a collector) that no US bill has ever been demonitized. But there is always a first time.
Bessent is the Secretary of the Treasury, which is not the same position as Treasurer. Both people’s signatures currently appear on paper money; the proposed change is to remove the signature of the Treasurer and replace it with Trump’s.
Incidentally, the current Treasurer, Brandon Beach, is the first man to hold the position since William Alexander Julian, appointed by FDR in 1933. Every president from Truman to Biden appointed a woman. (Honestly, this makes me wonder if Trump wanted to humiliate Beach for some reason, thought appointing him to a “woman’s job” would do it, and then, when he discovered nobody cared, decided to take away the position’s biggest public-facing responsibility.)
No argument in the UK.
“Our Chief Cashier’s signature is on every one of our banknotes. Chief Cashiers sign banknotes on behalf of the Bank to demonstrate our promise to pay the value of the note for all time.”
“for all time”?? I am pretty sure I have some old pound coins somewhere… are they worth anything? Well, those are metal… how about paper £5 notes?
And if I did walk into the Bank of England to try to argue the case that they should honor their promise, would I not be shooed out rather quickly?
Not if you went there during the posted hours for such transactions:
Exchanging notes at the Bank of England
The Bank of England counter is open Monday to Friday, 9.30am to 3pm (excluding Bank Holidays). Last entry at 2.45pm.
I first read that as “demonized”. Still appropriate…
One nice thing about US currency- all of it is still valid at face value.
Of course, if you take them to the BoE, they will be happy to give you a current fiver in exchange, even though inflation makes you a big loser.
As is UK currency, right back to the 8th century.
I read that as “demonized”, which is fairly accurate, if Trump scribbles on the bills…
