There’s another point to be made regarding copyright. At least in Australia, (and I suspect the US would not be much different) what Google does would not be illegal. That is, it is not criminal. It is just potentially actionable by the copyright holder. The copyright holder could sue Google for the damages that the copyright holder suffers as a result of Google’s reproduction of their work.
Those damages would almost always be nil. Google takes something that is deliberately made publically available by the copyright holder, and viciously and with malice aforethought, makes it publically available. The unspeakable fiends.
