Didn’t see it mentioned but there was a scene after the credits and it was a big one.
You’re forgetting that Lenny was trying to get Syd to help get Lenny out of David’s head - Lenny was threatening to meat-soup David’s brain if Syd didn’t help her. So, Syd helped - she provided a way for the Shadow King to switch out of David’s body, and from there the Shadow King did the jumping on its own.
Oliver remembered Melanie, then got possessed by the Shadow King, whom we’ve seen can edit the memories of whoever is being possessed (as it did to Syd in episode 1).
That’s an understatement!!
You’re right - it breaks the earlier rules established on how Syd’s power works. However I personally don’t have a problem with that in context. I just assumed the SK subverted her ability. It could well be that a fully trained Syd could actually posses others without transference and do so at will, controlling her ability rather than being a victim of it. As I see it:
1.) SK ( who desperately wanted out by that point ) jumps to Syd, leaving David behind. Syd ends up in David, with David.
2.) SK switches with Kerry. Kerry is now in Syd’s body.
3.) David/Syd confront SK in Kerry. David just barely wins - getting briefly knocked out and pushing SK out of Kerry ( now empty ). Disembodied SK finds the nearest host telepath to leap to, which is Oliver.
4.) In the aftermath of the confrontation as everyone is dazed and contused, Syd’s power wears wears off and everyone reverts to where they should be. SK escapes with Oliver.
By the by Hawley has confirmed that Melanie is a normal human, not a mutant. She just married one ( Oliver ).
Oh and too late to add - SK has his own telekinetic and telepathic powers. Remember when SK had its little soliloquy about how he had wanted to essentially suborn David so that they could combine their abilities, but then decided it was just too much work and locked David away in his mental coffin?
David is powerful, SK is also powerful ( but less so ). SK had just hoped to fully combine their abilities, a process he was working on that began to short-circuit when Syd entered David’s life and gave him purpose and drive again.
Can anyone explain the timeline because I’m quite confused about it. Oliver was frozen in the 60’s. All beatnick and flower power and stuff. They say he’s been frozen 20 years so that makes the present the 80’s. Some scenes support this like the payphone David uses early on or the reel-to-reel tape machine the psychiatrist has. But then there are flat screens and other things from current day. Somewhere 30 years went missing.
Best I understood, thee were a whole bunch of childhood scenes when the characters were either children, or grown ups revisiting.
But I am hanging on to this by the skin of my teeth …
The timeline is not supposed to make sense. The hospital monitor Clark was hooked up with said Nov 8 2016 on it.
Wow, thank you. We just went back and watched it. What was that???
My dvr missed it. What was it?
I am fully corrected on my mistaken belief that Melanie was telepathic.
up_the_junction, the link you posted didn’t work because the automatic link parser here gets confused by addresses ending in parentheses (like many Wikipedia pages). I’ve fixed it.
David and Syd are on a balcony looking out. A little sphere-shaped robot levitates in front of him. They wonder if it is an invention of Cary’s. It shoots a beam at David and he is teleported inside the sphere, which flies away with him inside. He is screaming, “Get me out of here! Help me!!!”
Understood. Thanks for that ![]()
I should probably add we may well be in the realm of ancient mythology as much as marvel super people, which may be the origins of Marvel anyway but I have no idea.
Ooookay.
Thanks.
Anyone want to take a stab at where they are going with that?
In the in-universe “real world” teleportation is a telekinetic power thing only so far and can occur easily within astral plane.
Are they introducing a new “real world” power?
A new telekinetic power that has now captured David?
Or (and at this point this would suck) are they actually in astral plane?
Or what other possibilities?
It was technology not mutant power. My guess is division 3 wanted to have a chat with him.
There was some comment towards the end of the episode when all hell was breaking loose where the Division 3 honcho said “dispatch the Equinox.” I’m assuming that flying robotic sphere thing was the Equinox, whatever that may be.
I want to know what happened to Division 2!

So I’ve just finished binge-watching the season and, to be honest, it probably worked out better that way because it made remembering all the weird stuff from episode to episode easier.
Visually stunning, with a plot that, despite being convoluted, actually all comes together. I disagree with the comparison to David Lynch, in that Lynch tends to put in a lot of weird stuff for the sake of weird stuff but which has nothing to do with the story. This was much tighter and consistent.
Also some really quite good acting from the entire cast. I didn’t place Clement at all (beyond a “why does that guy look familiar?” vibe) until after I’d finished the series. I’ve been a huge fan of Bill Irwin for years and thus was thrilled to see him in a substantial role. And Stevens, Plaza and Keller really put in some stellar performances.
But mostly I liked it because it wasn’t stupid. I’ve given up on all the DC-verse superhero shows (Flash, Supergirl, Arrow, Legends) because the plots are stupid and the characters act stupid in resolving the stupid plots. This…was fiendishly clever (as well as stylish), and it required the audience to keep up with it rather than dumbing it down.
Will definitely watch out for Season 2.
At first I had the same reaction but I think the heavyhandedness was entirely deliberate, partly for Audience Mindfuck Effect and partly to set up the character, the episode, and possibly the next season. We establish why the guy is so pissed of at David and Co, and also note that his hubby also works for Division 3. And it makes it more significant when he agrees with work with David later in the episode.
