Conan lost money, Leno lost money from advertising for the affiliates. You can’t generate the numbers you lose your job. Leno had a large payout if his contract was breached, Conan didn’t. Cheaper way to resolve the whole issue is can Conan and get Jay to agree to a renegotiated contract.
What are you talking about. $30 million was a huge golden parachute for Conan.
i believe if they let Jay go it woulda been a payout of $100million. hence the “cheaper” choice.
So you only have room for one late night host and Leno produces better commercial revenue then the correct decision is?
“Quiet down folks. We have exactly one hour to steal everything in this studio.”
Lovely.
Haven’t chimed in until now, but I have to say I love Leno and hate Conan, so I won’t miss him.
I’m also having a hard time feeling sorry for a guy who, for 7 months of work, will never have to work again.
Leno will once again win the late night ratings war, as Letterman sucks as well.
Carson was such a class act. When he was done, he walked away and never popped up again.
This last week, Conan has been acting like a baby, whining and crying at every opportunity. For the cash buyout he’s getting, he should be on his knees blowing everyone at NBC.
Never liked him, won’t miss him.
Leno makes money for NBC at 11:30. Conan didn’t. Get over it, Conan. it’s a business decision, nothing more. I wish I could get booted from my job with the parachute this crybaby got.
Jon Stewart is 47 but he attracts a younger demographic because of his incisive remarks and zany antics. It’s all in the flourish.
is “restricted NFL footage” real or something Conan made up
His earnings from 15 years of Late Night have to be far more than $33 million, so he probably hasn’t had to work in 10 years. In any case, this episode is good so far, but the montage should have been at the end, not near the beginning. I liked the exit interview and the topper to the money-wasting bits was solid.
True enough.
But he really seems to be “hurt”. Like his feelings have been bruised. I don’t think this is an act, which is why I find it so pathetic and sad.
I guess his fragile ego just can’t take the rejection.
He had his dream job and he lost it. We relocated his entire staff across the country and they are all out of work. He isn’t allowed to be upset?
The bit with Steve Carell was comedy gold.
Seriously. You don’t do “late night talk show host” for the money. You do it because you enjoy it. Plus he’s responsible for lots of other people. It’s not just him getting canned.
I iterated this position way upthread before the deal was struck, but now that it’s official I want to repeat myself. Conan played that sympathy card about the crew heavily on the show, and now that he’s getting a $45 million payday let’s see how much of it he shares with them and their poor, relocated families.
I’m just dying to find out.
He’s paid their wages out of pocket before. Most notably during the writer’s strike, IIRC.
I’m sure they were, and why wouldn’t they be? But as far as I’m concerned he’s taken it very well and he’s made some very funny jokes out of it.
According to all the reports from the other day, he’s getting $33 million and $12 million is going to the staff and crew.
Jay Leno is a talentless hack who doesn’t have an original thought or joke in his body. I hope all of you 65-year old AARP members enjoy him when he returns. Fuck him.
Say what you will about the man but that speech shows what a class act he is.
Listen at Conan being all sincere and classy and raw and honest! Go, Coco! It’s your birthday!
