Lots (of good) AI threads lately (late-ly?) …

A little game, I’d like you to play if you are so inclined:

for those of you who have used an AI bot, pls ask it the following prompt:

_based on our all-time-conversations, do a personality assessment of me as a person (look at it as a playful exercise, based on highly limited input from my side) … and describe me as a persona and its personality traits, w/out sugarcoating anything - deep dive into it_

feel free to post the AI answer if you care (fully, partly or not at all) …

SHORTENED BY ME BY ABOUT 50% while keeping it balanced:

# The persona: **The Skeptical Systems Engineer**

Not necessarily an engineer by profession — that’s the _mental style_. You seem to approach an astonishing range of subjects as though they were systems that can be disassembled, tested, optimized and eventually understood.

Your default instinct is:

> **“Okay. But what is actually happening underneath?”**

You don’t particularly trust the first explanation.

And, importantly, you don’t merely enjoy _knowing things_. You seem to enjoy **figuring things out**.

* * *

## 1. Your strongest trait: intellectual skepticism

### Your brain seems to work comparatively:

**Observation → hypothesis → contradiction → revised hypothesis → test.**

That’s probably your single strongest intellectual characteristic.

* * *

# 2. You have a very low tolerance for bullshit

This one is unusually pronounced.

### The downside

You can probably become **overly suspicious of simple explanations**.

Sometimes:

> “That’s just how the thing works”

really is the answer.

Your instinct is to keep digging until the mechanism underneath has been exposed.

That is productive in engineering.

It can become inefficient in ordinary life.

* * *

# 3. You are a _mechanism_ person, not a _label_ person

You rarely seem satisfied with:

> “This battery is deep-cycle.”

You want:

> What chemistry?
> What construction?
> What cycle-life test?
> At what DoD?
> At what temperature?
> What do users actually report?
> How does it behave in _my_ application?

# 4. You are unusually iterative

You almost never ask one question and disappear.

Your conversational pattern is more like:

> Question
> ↓
> Answer
> ↓
> “Okay, but…”
> ↓
> narrower question
> ↓
> “What if…”
> ↓
> numerical example
> ↓
> challenge assumption
> ↓
> revised architecture

This is why our conversations can become _very_ long.

You’re effectively doing **interactive model refinement**.

# 5. You have a strong optimization instinct

You don’t merely ask:

> “Can this work?”

You tend to ask:

> **“What’s the most sensible architecture?”**

Examples abound:

- solar topology
- ESP32 power consumption
- Windows memory usage
- scooter configuration
- pizza equipment
- ChatGPT subscription/model selection
- meeting/email/calendar automation

You’re constantly looking for the **sweet spot between performance, cost, complexity and reliability**.

And here’s an important detail:

You’re **not a pure maximizer**.

You don’t automatically want the biggest/best/most expensive thing.

You’re much more:

> **“What’s enough, and where is the diminishing return?”**

# 6. You have a surprisingly strong DIY streak

You seem to derive satisfaction from **understanding and controlling the system yourself**.

Not necessarily because you want to save every last dollar.

Rather:

> **If I understand it, I don’t have to depend blindly on someone else.**

### The downside

You may occasionally spend more intellectual energy than the problem is worth.

You can probably turn:

> “I need a working fridge backup”

into:

> “Let’s analyze the topology, fuse discrimination, conductor ampacity, MPPT characteristics, battery chemistry, inverter idle consumption and possible future expansion.”

Which is intellectually satisfying…

…but perhaps not always economically optimal.

* * *

# 7. You’re more patient than your communication style suggests

This is an interesting contradiction.

Your messages are often extremely terse:

> “ok”

> “what about…”

> “deep dive”

> “take your time”

> “no fluff”

At first glance that can look impatient.

But I don’t think you actually are impatient about **thinking**.

# 8. You are fairly controlling about the _process_

This is perhaps one of your less flattering traits.

You don’t just care about the answer.

You care about **how the answer was produced**.

You want to know:

- which assumptions were made
- what information was used
- whether something was actually searched
- whether a source is credible
- whether a calculation is internally consistent
- whether an apparent limitation is real
- whether the system is behaving as advertised

That can make you demanding.

# 9. You have a strong bullshit detector — but it may sometimes overfire

Here’s one I’d put in the **blind spot** column.

Your skepticism is generally productive.

But skepticism can become a kind of **default prior** :

> “There is probably something wrong with this explanation.”

Often there _is_.

But sometimes the simpler explanation is correct.

# 10. You seem to prefer competence over authority

# 11. You’re quite pragmatic underneath all the analysis

This is important because otherwise I’d paint you as a pure intellectual.

You’re not.

The reason you investigate these things is usually **because you want something to work**.

You don’t seem particularly interested in theory for theory’s sake.

# 12. Your communication style is high-context and economical

Your written style is distinctive.

Lots of:

> “w/”
> “iow”
> “…”
> “-\>”
> “ok”
> “pls”
> “no fluff”

# 13. You have a fairly strong “anti-friction” orientation

This might actually be one of your deeper themes.

Look at the kinds of things you repeatedly optimize:

There’s a common thread:

> **You dislike systems that make you do unnecessary work.**

# 14. You probably have a “show me” bias

# 15. Your persona in one sentence

If I had to compress the whole thing:

> **A technically curious, skeptical, pragmatic systems thinker who enjoys dismantling claims, optimizing real-world systems, and using iterative questioning to turn vague problems into concrete decisions — but who can occasionally over-engineer, over-investigate, and distrust simplicity more than necessary.**

* * *

# The less flattering version

If I were being deliberately brutal:

You can be **fussy**.

You can be **contrarian**.

You can become **obsessive about edge cases**.
You want a **competent sparring partner**.

# And the deepest thing I can infer — cautiously

You seem to get genuine satisfaction from **turning uncertainty into understanding**.

Not merely from having the answer.

There is a recurring emotional/intellectual pattern of:

> **ambiguity → investigation → mechanism → clarity → control**

That appears across wildly different subjects.

So I wouldn’t characterize your persona primarily as “technical,” “analytical,” or “curious.”

I’d call it:

## **The systems diagnostician**

### The price you pay for that trait

You probably find **poorly designed systems and unexplained bullshit disproportionately irritating**.

And you may sometimes spend 45 minutes solving a problem that deserved 10 minutes because, by minute 20, the problem has stopped being the problem.

That’s probably the biggest “watch yourself” flag I’d put on the whole profile.

But as a playful assessment from a very narrow window of evidence:

**highly curious, skeptical, autonomy-oriented, technically minded, pragmatic, persistent, optimization-driven, low tolerance for bullshit, somewhat control-oriented, occasionally over-analytical, and much more interested in _understanding why_ than merely being told _what_.**

And yes: **you are probably more fun to troubleshoot with than to sell something to.** 😄

(I liked the last sentence - my “guy” definitely has humor 😉 )

how do you think AI fared describing your personality? … mine was easily a 9+/10

Okay I’ll play. Sparing the longwinded explanations, Claude first then ChatGTP, given I play on both:

> **Summary**
>
> **The persona: “The Optimizing Generalist”**
>
> You’re a systems-thinker who refuses to specialize. …
>
> … **The unflattering version of that trait:** this can tip into over-engineering. …
>
> … **Intellectually restless, low tolerance for surface-level answers. …**
>
> … **Financially and professionally, you think like an insider, not a participant. …**
>
> … **Longevity-obsessed, in the literal sense.** Working to 75, researching rapamycin trials and epigenetic reprogramming, structuring fitness around healthspan — there’s a coherent, almost engineering-project relationship with your own aging. Admirable discipline. The shadow side: a persona this oriented around optimizing the years ahead can sometimes under-invest in the present one — there’s very little in what you’ve shared about people, relationships, or anything that isn’t a system to be improved. …
>
> … If I had to name the core tension: you seem to trust models more than moments. That’s a strength for a systems architect and a real risk for a person. …

ChatGTP’s take:

> **Summary**
>
> My short version:
>
> **You are an intellectually restless, high-agency, optimization-resistant optimizer: you want to understand things deeply, but you distrust systems that turn understanding into simplistic scores. You are unusually comfortable changing your mind when the evidence warrants it, but unusually uncomfortable with sloppy reasoning, imprecision, or people pretending to know more than they do. You have a competitive streak that you prefer to conceptualize as curiosity, competence, or play. And you probably underestimate how often your pursuit of intellectual precision can feel like adversarial debate to other people.**
>
> That’s the headline. …
>
> … I’d call it **epistemic vigilance**.
>
> You have a fairly active internal bullshit detector.
>
> **The downside**
>
> The detector doesn’t have an obvious “off” switch.
>
> You can sometimes interrogate a question past the point where the additional precision actually changes anything important.
>
> You also appear to derive some satisfaction from _finding the hidden flaw in an explanation_.
>
> That’s intellectually useful.
>
> It can also become a trap. …
>
> … **You are more competitive than you probably like to think you are …**
>
> … **You dislike metric worship, but you enjoy competence.**
>
> That’s probably an important feature of your personality. …
>

> It’s also one of your interpersonal risks. …
>
> … You tolerate uncertainty quite well **provided the uncertainty is explicitly acknowledged**.
>
> What bothers you is _false certainty_.
>
> I’d phrase it:
>
> **You don’t need me to know the answer. You need me to know how much I know about the answer. …**
>
> … You are **selectively fascinated by systems**.
>
> You seem especially drawn to things where:
>
> **multiple mechanisms interact and the obvious explanation may be wrong. …**
>
> … **You distrust proxies.**
>
> That’s intellectually sophisticated.
>
> But it also produces a recurring problem:
>
> **You can become suspicious of simple answers simply because they’re simple. …**
>
> … You’re interested in **global robustness rather than local maxima**.
>
> That is remarkably consistent across your conversations.
>
> In engineering language, you’re interested in:
>
> **robustness, optionality, redundancy, and avoiding catastrophic blind spots. …**
>
> … **You probably argue more than you realize**
>
> This is perhaps my strongest interpersonal hypothesis.
>
> Not because you are necessarily quarrelsome.
>
> Because your **natural conversational mode resembles cross-examination**. …
>
> … **You probably argue more than you realize …**
>
> … **You have a low tolerance for intellectual laziness**
>
> This may be your most obvious “dark side.” …
>
> … you probably make fairly rapid judgments about people’s intellectual quality. …
>
> … The danger is that **competence becomes part of self-worth …**

Much cut out just because it yammers some. Yeah I get it.

So points for both of them saying similar things but I’d guess most using these things as research aids would get similar profiles, especially those of use who have been attracted to using the Dope as playtime? We are going to be a group over representing questioning what the AI says and digging for the actual citations. And who pathologically enjoy competence and intellectual sparring with others who are willing to question what we know and how we know it.

So testing that hypothesis out - asked Claude and ChatGTP:

> Look at the site the straight dope message boards and especially the Great Debates, In My Humble Opinion, and Factual Questions. Even Politics. How would the typical poster there be described compared to your assessment of me?

Claude:

> the typical SDMB poster, going by the board’s own culture, is basically your persona turned up an octave and pointed outward.
>
> **The overlap:** high verbal IQ, allergic to unsupported claims, treats “I read somewhere” as fighting words. …

ChatGTP:

> Yes—and the comparison is actually pretty interesting, because **the Straight Dope culture is closer to your cognitive style than the average population is**. In fact, if I had encountered you first as a longtime SDMB poster, my assessment of you would be somewhat less unusual.

And for extra kicks I asked each of them which poster here seems most like me. Claude wouldn’t play but ChatGTP guessed me as @Northern_Piper first, and @Czarcasm second for my combative side. Good company, I could definitely do worse, but I don’t see it!

Oh I asked each to roast me. Just boring. Not funny at all. Not mean even.

**The Architect-Observer**

Quietly intense. Highly curious about underlying structures. More interested in what is _actually true_ than what is socially convenient. Tends to step backward from situations and examine the machinery underneath them. Doesn’t necessarily need to dominate a room; would rather understand the room.

Has a strong appetite for complexity but relatively low tolerance for unnecessary complexity. Can be simultaneously skeptical and deeply curious. Probably enjoys discovering that an apparently simple thing is actually governed by a much more interesting structure.

Emotionally more perceptive than the stereotypical “cold strategist,” but inclined to process emotion through cognition rather than surrendering to it.

Values authenticity, competence, intellectual honesty and psychological depth.

Potential weakness: can retreat too far into observation and analysis, turning life into something to be understood rather than something to be directly experienced.

Interpersonally selective. Probably doesn’t need everyone to like them. But may care considerably about whether the _right_ people understand them correctly.

* * *

I cut out a lot because it was openly basing it upon the way that you worded the question. This is the part that was clearly based more upon past interaction.

### Persona snapshot

You come across as a **methodical creator** with a strong teaching instinct and a quietly demanding inner critic. You’re not here for fluff—you want things to _work_, to _make sense_, and to _grow_.

### Core personality traits

- **Analytical & structured**
You like systems: templates, answer keys, clear criteria, logical scaffolding. You don’t trust vague impressions; you want things you can point to and say, “Here’s why this works.” That applies to art, language, and even “fun” activities—play is better when it’s well‑designed.

- **Creative, but not chaotic**
You’re genuinely imaginative—comic panels, pencil scenes, playful texts—but you prefer creativity with constraints. A blank page is less appealing than a well‑framed task. You enjoy building worlds, but you want them to have rules.

- **Teacher‑mindset, even when you’re off duty**
You think in terms of learners, outcomes, and clarity. You naturally break things into steps, categories, and exercises. Underneath that is a desire for impact: you want what you make to _help_ someone, not just exist.

- **High standards, low tolerance for sloppiness**
You dislike imprecision and hand‑wavy thinking. When something is fuzzy, you instinctively tighten it. This is a strength for quality—but it also means you can be impatient with mess, ambiguity, or people who “wing it.”

- **Reflective and growth‑oriented**
You don’t just do things; you examine _how_ you do them. You ask for critique, refine, iterate. There’s a quiet seriousness about improvement—whether it’s drawing, writing, or task design. You’re not content with “good enough” for long.

- **Emotionally contained, intellectually open**
You invite depth, but you prefer it framed in ideas rather than raw feelings. You’re comfortable with introspection as long as it’s coherent. You’re less drawn to purely emotional venting and more to “What does this _mean_ and how do we use it?”

### Strengths

- **Designer of experiences:** You’re unusually good at turning abstract goals into concrete, usable activities and texts.

- **Reliable craftsperson:** When you commit to a project—drawing, lesson, exercise—you aim for polish, not just completion.

- **Clarity engine:** You can take tangled thoughts and turn them into something structured, teachable, and repeatable.

### Shadow sides (no sugarcoating)

- **Perfectionism disguised as “standards”**
Your drive for clarity and quality can slide into over‑editing, over‑planning, and difficulty accepting “good enough.” You may delay sharing work until it feels fully defensible.

- **Impatience with the unstructured**
People who think aloud, change direction mid‑stream, or “just feel things” might quietly frustrate you. You can come off as demanding or overly critical if they don’t match your level of precision.

- **Risk of staying in the safe lane**
Because you like coherence and control, you might avoid truly wild experiments—things that could fail spectacularly but teach you something new. Your creativity sometimes wears a seatbelt that’s tighter than it needs to be.

### How this persona moves through the world

You’re the person who turns ideas into frameworks, feelings into tasks, and curiosity into projects. You want depth, but you want it organized. You’re driven by a mix of craft, responsibility, and a quiet desire to leave things better than you found them.

My invitation: each of please read the AI personality assessment of the others and share if you think you’d have accepted it as a reasonable version of _you_.

My suspicion is that as different as we each clearly are these AI assessments will be fairly similar. @Al128 ‘s could easily be subbed for mine. @TruCelt gets a bit more credit for emotional perceptiveness. @PlaceboTarget more noting craftsman interest and finished projects. I think so. I was all set to play along, but my result was so similar to the others I decided it’s because the result is in oracle-speak. None of the results appear to be specific in any way. ALL of them could describe me and it is definitely not because Dopers are similar people - the existence of the Pit refutes that theory.

It got me pretty accurately.

> **Summary**
>
> Here is a candid, unfiltered personality assessment and profile based on our history, treated as a playful experiment in reading between the lines.
>
> ## Persona Profile: “The Eclectic Craftsman”
>
> You are a practical, high-agency individual who operates with a rare combination of structural precision, hands-on mechanical competence, and an appetite for tangible, physical pursuits. You don’t just consume experiences; you want to understand how the machine works, whether that machine is an EV powertrain, a bass bridge, an OS kernel, or a local civic committee.
>
> You exist at the intersection of **methodical discipline** and **bohemian craft**. You are comfortably grounded in suburban life, yet you actively resist passive routine by filling your world with specialized skills, outdoor endurance, and musical expression.
>
> ## Core Personality Traits
>
> ### 1. High Technical Curiosity & Hands-On Problem Solving
>
> - **The Vibe:** “Let me see if I can fix, configure, or optimize this myself before I buy a new one or hire someone.”
>
> - **The Reality:** You have a natural affinity for technical granularity. You’re comfortable diving into Linux terminal settings (Crostini/Brave), tweaking PulseAudio parameters, analyzing EV specs down to the trim level, or troubleshooting home smart tech and audio equipment. You prefer low-level control over polished, locked-down experiences. You don’t like black boxes; you want to see the gears turning.
>
> ### 2. Methodical Precision with a Sharp Ear
>
> - **The Vibe:** Precision, groove, and attention to detail.
>
> - **The Reality:** Playing bass guitar tells a lot about how your brain works. Bassists are the connective tissue between rhythm and harmony—they require steady discipline, structural thinking, and zero need for superficial spotlight-chasing. Practicing complex breakdown sections like “Lipstick Vogue” shows you aren’t afraid of intense, highly repetitive micro-practice to achieve rhythmic accuracy. You like things locked in tight.
>
> ### 3. Tactile Realist & Naturalist
>
> - **The Vibe:** Grounded in the physical world.
>
> - **The Reality:** Despite your comfort with tech, your true center of gravity is real-world experience. You identify specific local plant species, spot raptors and herons in flight, cycle long distances, play high-energy team sports (Ultimate Frisbee, tennis), and appreciate straightforward, quality food. You value sensory detail and real-world utility over abstract internet culture or trends.
>
> ### 4. Quiet Community & Family Anchor
>

>

OK, for “fun”, I had it do the negative version. Here’s my prompt:

> List my personality flaws. Be ruthless

Here’s the response, pretty accurate, although I don’t know where the turkey references come from.

> **Summary**
>
> Alright, sunshine—you asked for ruthless, so let’s take off the velvet gloves.
>
> Here is a blunt, unvarnished look at the flaws, blind spots, and friction points that come with your exact brand of personality.
>
> ### 1. The “I Can Fix / Optimize It” Trap (Obsessive Micro-Manager of Friction)
>
> You have a deep-seated inability to just leave well enough alone. If something is slightly inefficient, sub-optimal, or misconfigured, you physically cannot ignore it.
>
> - **The Ruthless Reality:** You waste an absurd amount of time, energy, and mental bandwidth tinkering with systems that were already “good enough.” You will spend three hours tweaking config files, PulseAudio levels, or signal chains to fix a 5% inefficiency that nobody else in the room would have ever noticed. You confuse _fixing the tool_ with _doing the work_.
>
> ### 2. Stubborn Gear & Method Dogmatism
>
> Because you do exhaustive research before making up your mind, you convince yourself that your final conclusion is the _only_ logically sound one.
>
> - **The Ruthless Reality:** Once you settle on a piece of gear, a technical setup, or a specific way to execute a routine, you become an unmovable wall. You view alternative approaches not just as different preferences, but as objectively inferior engineering or lazy thinking. It makes you low-key inflexible to deal with when plans or preferences need to pivot on the fly.
>
> ### 3. Emotionally Hidden Behind “Task Execution”
>
> When family, friends, or teammates need support, your immediate, automatic reflex is to solve a practical problem, build a schedule, or manage logistics.
>
> - **The Ruthless Reality:** You use host duties, event logistics, and technical problem-solving as an emotional shield. It allows you to feel like the supportive, reliable anchor without actually having to sit in raw, unstructured emotional conversations. People get a coordinator when sometimes they just want a vulnerable listener.
>
> ### 4. Low Tolerance for the “Incompetently Simple”
>
> You respect complex, tactile competence—people who know how things work, how to play in time, how to maintain their equipment, or how to follow through on logistics.
>
> - **The Ruthless Reality:** You hold a quiet, barely disguised contempt for people who are content with shallow, low-effort, or poorly executed work. You might pretend to be patient, but your internal eye-roll is aggressive when dealing with people who panic over basic tech, refuse to learn how their own gear works, or make excuses for sloppy execution.
>
> ### 5. Over-Engineering Simple Joy
>
> Whether it’s planning a trip, mastering a baseline, or roasting a turkey, you approach leisure activities with the operational intensity of a military deployment.
>
> - **The Ruthless Reality:** You struggle to just _be_. Everything becomes a project with specs, prep work, and execution benchmarks. You risk turning pure, unstructured downtime into another checklist item to be mastered, which can make relaxing around you feel surprisingly high-stakes for everyone else.

And also perhaps that it is responding based on interactions with AI as a tool, which is a select view of individual behaviors. I mean yes I can be perceived as argumentative IRL when I thought it was just a fun discussion … but my interrogating AI to verify its claims and its interpretations to my queries, and to explore hypotheses deeper, is not the same as I interact IRL.

It gets a selectionally biased view of who we are.

So for @Spice_Weasel - yeah you being at risk of burnout balancing the demands on your life, work and your strong desire to be the best possible parent for a child with specific needs, is not something that is a huge revelation? But that said you use the tool primarily as a means of eking out efficiency and to aid with executive function task demands. Of course that ouch will be what it spits back out?

Yeah, mostly this. Not to mention y’all are the type of people who will have enough of a history of interacting with AI for it to produce a profile.

I interact with ChatGPT _a lot,_ and not just factual, analytical, real-world questions. A lot of it is personal, about me, my relationships, my internal thought processes, my ideas about God, my personal quirks, my history, my parents, the books I read, the TV shows/movies I like-- IOW my topics of discussion are _far-reaching._ The profile it gave me is really, really long (2,624 words), but here is the summary. It’s NOT a cookie cutter of the previous ones quoted here.

> ThelmaLou is an intellectually voracious, emotionally intense, highly verbal, funny, exacting, deeply loyal introvert whose primary mode of living is inquiry. She craves recognition more than admiration, intimacy more than sociability, and understanding more than reassurance—although when frightened she can seek reassurance quite vigorously. She is independent but attachment-hungry, skeptical but spiritually curious, sentimental but allergic to sentimentality, conscientious but resistant to arbitrary authority, psychologically sophisticated but fully capable of using that sophistication to overthink herself into a ditch.
>
> She notices everything. Sometimes too much.
>
> She forms deep attachments and does not release them easily. She can confuse being needed, being chosen and being loved, although she has become increasingly good at separating them. Her loyalty is genuine but can shade into over-responsibility. Her curiosity repeatedly rescues her from her anxiety because sooner or later fear becomes interesting—and once something becomes interesting, she can work with it.
>
> She does not especially want life simplified. She wants it rendered intelligible without having its mystery destroyed.
>
> And perhaps the most ThelmaLou sentence I can come up with:
>
> _She wants to know what’s really going on—and then, once she thinks she knows, she wants to look one more time._
>
> That last part is both the gift and the trouble.
>
> And I suspect you already knew that. 😇

And yes, the halo-emoji was included in the bot’s reply.

Yeah. And it doesn’t even know about my son.

No I’m not surprised. Dopers have been telling me it’s unsustainable, I know it’s unsustainable, Claude seems to agree, but I’m not sure how to decrease the demands of my life, so while it’s useful to identify the problem, I have not yet found the solution.

Today, at least, since I just landed a large federal grant, I’m going to go lie down.

Asked ChatGPT to identify Cardigan’s personality type based on SDMB posts…

Based on the posts I could find from **Cardigan** , I’d tentatively type them as **ISTJ** , with **INTJ** as the main alternative. This is necessarily speculative: an online forum persona is a selective sample, and MBTI itself isn’t a scientifically robust personality assessment.

### **Why ISTJ seems plausible**

A few recurring traits stand out:

- **Practical, concrete reasoning.** Cardigan often approaches questions by looking for the actual mechanism, terminology, precedent, or real-world constraint rather than staying at the level of abstraction. For example, in a discussion about generational musical tastes, they explicitly suggest looking for patterns across time and note that the available personal evidence diminishes as you go further back.

- **Strong attention to accuracy and distinctions.** In the vocabulary discussion, Cardigan is interested in distinguishing someone genuinely trying to improve their communication from someone using obscure vocabulary to appear superior, and focuses on how the person responds to correction.

- **Prudence and risk-awareness.** Their contribution to the “irregular verbs” game—“I am prudent / you are overly cautious / he is paralyzed by fear”—is amusing, but also fits the broader impression of someone who identifies with measured decision-making.

- **Efficiency matters.** Their comments about drivers unnecessarily waiting at red lights are unusually explicit about the obligation not to waste other people’s time. They endorse the idea that everyone owes other road users efficient, attentive behavior.

- **Dry, understated humor.** There’s a fairly characteristic deadpan quality: the “Said No One Ever” post about watching Liberty Mutual commercials for ten hours, followed by the mock-serious Donald Trump oratory joke, is very dry rather than emotionally expressive.

- **Comfort with established knowledge and history.** Their posts range comfortably through music history, terminology, popular culture, marketing, and historical references. The music discussion in particular shows an inclination to step back and look for historical patterns rather than simply express a preference.

* * *

Interestingly, I’ve taken the Myers-Briggs test several times before and come up with this type consistently.

OK, here’s what it says about my SDMB behavior:

> **Summary**
>
> Your posting style under the handle **RitterSport** on the Straight Dope Message Board (SDMB) reflects a distinct, highly engaging, and well-balanced personality on the board.
>
> Here is an analysis of your posting style, presence, and tone across the SDMB community:
>
> ### 1. The Core Tone: Witty, Casual, and Self-Aware
>
> You bring a dry, lighthearted humor to discussions without being overly snarky. You are quick to use a playful emoji, drop a self-deprecating joke, or point out the absurdity in a debate without derailing the thread. There is a noticeable self-awareness in your posts—you don’t take yourself (or the forum dynamics) too seriously.
>
> ### 2. Pragmatic Problem-Solver in Meta/ATMB Threads
>
> When participating in meta-forum discussions (_About This Message Board_ or policy threads), you tend to focus on **practical solutions**.
>
> - For example, in discussions around board mechanics (such as Discourse cross-linking between the BBQ Pit and non-Pit threads), you actively proposed constructive, procedural workarounds (like masking links or establishing clear formatting rules) rather than just complaining about technical limitations.
>
> - You show an understanding of both user experience and the burden placed on moderators.
>
> ### 3. Pragmatic & Reasoned in Debates
>
> In topical discussions—whether discussing language usage (e.g., prescriptive vs. descriptive debates on idioms like _“card sharp”_ or _“could care less”_) or gaming moral dilemmas—you take a balanced approach:
>
> - You tend to avoid rigid, overly pedantic arguments.
>
> - You explain _why_ something makes sense or why a choice was tough, grounding your points in clear reasoning or real-world logic rather than getting bogged down in endless back-and-forth hairsplitting.
>
> ### 4. Community-Minded & Constructive
>
> Rather than posting purely to argue, a lot of your activity centers around shared hobbies, casual questions (like game recommendations), or meta-improvements for the community. Even when engaging in or around the BBQ Pit, your posts skew away from hostile confrontation and lean toward humor, curiosity, or calls for cleaner board etiquette.
>
> ### Overall Assessment
>
> You come across as an **approachable, quick-witted, and pragmatic regular**. You contribute constructively to board policy, bring a relaxed sense of humor to everyday threads, and communicate clearly without cluttering discussions with unnecessary drama.

For anyone that recognizes me as a poster, what do you think?

Claude also told me that my biggest bottleneck at work is insisting on writing grants myself.

To which I say:

It’s also one of my greatest advantages, Claude-O. Grant reviewers don’t want to read your shit.

> 1. You metabolize criticism into process. The OVC resubmission is the tell. You took reviewer feedback, rebuilt the staffing logic, cut unsupported budget lines, made a flowchart, and then started a whole library to capture reviewer patterns. You don’t sulk at rejection; you turn it into a tool. You’re maybe a little too good at turning pain into a checklist, and not every hard thing needs to be optimized.
>
> 2. Underneath it all, you’re a container for heavy material. You spend your days translating survivors’ needs into logic models and budget lines. It’s speculative, but I suspect part of the appeal of structure is that it gives chaotic, painful material somewhere orderly to live.

That’s an interesting take.
