Yes! There’s plenty of reasonable debate to be had on immigration, the economy, debt, regulation, foreign policy, health care, and dozens of other issues. Some of Trump’s positions on these issues, like that migrant families should be deliberately mistreated to deter future migration, or that democratic elections aren’t legitimate unless Trump wins, should be considered beyond the pale, but not all of them.

While Cuomo most certainly should not have tried to cover up the COVID death toll in nursing homes, his putting “all those COVID patients in nursing homes” has been done to death here at SDMB, and even his most passionate detractors (like me) who have elderly parents in nursing homes are capable of looking at this and realizing he didn’t have much choice.
And as to him “groping his female staff,” go ahead. Find one defender here at SDMB (or anywhere in in the “liberal” world). Go ahead. I’ll wait.

That’s what a paper released this week by the National Bureau of Economic Research did: It took the 315 largest U.S cities, and compared the state of the coronavirus in the 10 days before George Floyd was killed and then the 25 days after. Do places like Minneapolis see big case growth?
Typically, 25 days has been enough to detect past differences in case growth. Social distancing measures were shown to make a difference in cases just five to 10 days after being enacted, while another paper showed growth in cases two weeks after local universities took spring breaks. If a difference in growth was detectable, 25 days is enough to detect it.
Instead, the researchers found zero difference in case growth in cities with big protests compared to cities with small or no protests. In particular, their confidence intervals meant they were at least 95% confident that any difference was less than 0.5 percentage point — not only did they find zero difference, they were quite sure of it.
They then looked to see if there was any difference in the coronavirus between cities in which protests were persistent over many days and where they were not. No difference. They looked to see if there was a difference where protests were violent. Still, no difference. Finally, they looked to see if there was a difference in cities where curfews were ordered. No difference.
Interestingly, the researchers also found that there was an increase in social distancing as a result in the protests — not by much, but by about 2%. People stayed at home more than they did in the week or two leading up to the protests. This might have been enough to mitigate whatever additional cases big protests would have added.

Democrats alternate between talking about how important CRT is, then denying that it exists when pressured. Democrats have asserted that the last election, filled with last minute ad-hoc rule changes and new voting practices that had completely unsecured chains of control over ballots, was somehow the most secure election in history.
And the problem of global warming wouldn’t be nearly so bad if the left hadn’t spent the last 40 years demonizing nucleat power and using lawfare to shut down nuclear projects. Unreasoning opposition to nuclear power and subsequent lies and scaremongering by the anti-nuke left may turn out to be the most dangerous rejection of science in history. A Democratic governor in New York just shut down the Indian Point reactor, and another one will soon shut down 9% of California’s carbon-free electricity when Diablo Canyon is shut down with no replacement.
And that’s the biggest Democratic lie right there - that the squishy, uncontrolled election you just went through under emergency COVID protocols and which left half the country in an uproar was somehow the height of enlightened democracy and secure elections, and any attempt to install some prodedural controls over that mess or restore the rules to what they were pre-COVID is destroying the very concept of fairness and democracy.
It’s hard to fathom how voter ID is racist when 80% of the public, including large majorities of Black and Hispanic voters, support it. But Democrats are sticking to that line anyway, no matter how ridiculous it is, because the racist attack is their goto strategy for anything they don’t like.

But @Sam_Stone made one valid point about the fact that the conditions on the border are not markedly improved and Biden’s immigration policy, if it was Trump’s, would be the result of endless criticism and debate from the left. I’ve stopped watching CNN and MSNBC for the most part. But the silence on the subject from PBS and BBC is deafening. Not much discussion of it here on the boards either. Perhaps I’m wrong and have simply managed to be entirely blind to the highly charged controversy. You tell me.
