Let me know about some lesser known scifi movies!

Immortel Ad Vitam

Really rather strange and disjointed French sci fi film, apparently based on a graphic novel which I’ve never read but maybe it would make the movie easier to understand:confused:

Basically a woman wakes up on a transport with no memory and tries to figure out who or what she is, while a man who has been in cryosleep for decades is accidentally awakened and possessed by the Egyptian god Horus while on the run from Bastet and Anubis who live in a floating pyramid shaped spaceship.

Now aside from the bizarre plot the movie features some incredible sci fi visuals, that remind of the French sci fi comics that also inspired The Fifth Element. The problem is while some portions of the film are dazzling and feature some dazzling CGI and effects work some portions of the film(including actors!) are done in really poor CGI and effects work that not only looks horrible but is out of place with the rest of the film. This includes some human characters done in really poor CGI, it really is disjointed and way too ugly for 2004. My guess is the production ran out of money or something and cheaply made those portions.

Moon Zero Two (1969) Hammer Film’s science fiction western in space. Great fun!

I love that film!

Our library has bought a few obscure sf movies that I intend to watch soon:

Who?, based on the novel by Algis Budrys, about an American scientist captured by Communists and given a metal face. With Elliott Gould and Trevor Howard.

The World, the Flesh and the Devil. Harry Belafonte, Mel Ferrer and Inger Stevens are the last three people alive on Earth.

The Mind of Mr. Soames. Terence Stamp plays a man who has been in a coma from birth, and has to be educated to adulthood when he finally awakens. Based on a novel by Charles Eric Maine.

Millennium 1989 with Kris Kristofferson. A nice time travel paradox flick.
Also, someone mentioned Screamers up thread. I fucking love Screamers.

Timerider - Time travel on a dirt bike. Written by Michael Nesmith, the Monkee

Lifeforce - Space vampires in London, not as good as the book. Has a pre-Jean Luc Patrick Stewart.

Based on a novel by John Varley. Haven’t seen the movie, I need to put it on my Netflix list. The FAA Oakland ATC center is a significant player in the novel, at least. The real one isn’t in Oakland but is in walking distance from my house.

I saw that a long time ago on HBO or Showtime. I remember it being pretty good.

Lifeform. Good luck finding a copy, I think, but it’s quite an interesting “alien monster” film. Well worth hunting for, as I remember.

I thought you were talking about Lifeforce, a 1985 movie about alien vampires written by Dan O’Bannon and directed by Tobe Hooper.

Not a very good movie, despite O’Bannon and Hooper. But it did have Mathilda May as the head vampire and she essentially played the entire movie in the nude.

That is the only part of the movie I remember

Mindwarp AKA Brain Slasher-

Recently caught this hard to find movie, it was surprisingly decent for what amounts to a low budget B-movie. I liked it, the plot twist is obvious nowadays though. Special effects are on the level of a Doctor Who episode but it didn’t bug me. In a post apocalyptic world a woman stuck inside a sealed city is sick of living her whole life in Infinisytnh a holodeck basically, she yearns for something real so she gets it, or does she?

Sunshine.

A damn good sci-fi movie by Danny Boyle before he became the guy who made Slumdog Millionaire.

That was Lifeforce. Lifeform is somewhat different. Less boobs. Though it does feature a very young Ryan Phillipe.

Death Machine is another lesser known sci-fi movie. Pretty fun.

Mom and Dad Save the World – with John Lovitz as a love-struck outer space emperor. Very enjoyable.

Time Rider: the Adventure of Lyle Swann – With Fred Ward as a motocross rider accidentally sent back to the Old West.

Battle Beyond the Stars – extremely cheesy outer space version of the Magnificent Seven.

Liquid Sky – bizarre mixture of drug use, illicit sex, punk rock and alien invasion.

Re: the Quatermass films.

Pretty sure there was only one other film: Quatermass.
I liked it for its pro-science stance (the idiots who disregard Quatermass’ warnings get vaporized).

It’s been years since I’ve seen it but that’s what I took from it.
One I would add that I don’t think I have seen listed is Splice.

This one actually holds up pretty well, & was my favorite movie of all time as a kid.

My brother bugged me for YEARS to watch this one.. I’m very glad I did, & I came in this thread to say it.

A couple low-budget, independents:

Lunopilis - http://movies.netflix.com/WiMovie/70201166?strkid=394365757_0_0&trkid=222336&movieid=70201166

 • About a secret civilization on the moon. Kinda cheesy but it has a good documentary feel.

Primer - http://dvd.netflix.com/Movie/Primer/60034782?strkid=464878914_0_0&strackid=105b8182d4efc4ae_0_srl&trkid=222336

 • Confusing at times but feels very real. Puts a new spin on time-travel.

Enemy Mine was a remake of Hell In The Pacific with Toshiro Mifuni and Lee Marvin. A great film as well.

Though not science fiction.
